What are the responsibilities and job description for the SUPERVISOR-ANIMAL LAB position at University of Alabama at Birmingham?
To coordinate with peers and Animal Resources Program (ARP) management to supervise employees and participate in the operation of the UAB Animal Care and Use Program. To ensure ARP operations are carried out in an efficient and productive manner. To manage personnel and equipment of ARP facilities. To prepare and submit all necessary documentation, verifying completion and quality of the tasks outlined on them. To supervise Animal Laboratory Technician personnel which may include training, mentoring, assigning work schedules, disciplinary action, and conducting performance appraisals.Participates in the creation and validation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), or equipment operation manuals striving toward quality improvement and ensuring personnel compliance with procedures once established. Duties & Responsibilities:
High School diploma or GED required AND 5 years of animal husbandry related experience required AND 1 year of supervisory experience. Work experience MAY NOT substitute for education requirement.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supervises personnel with the support of the ARP management. Ensures all personnel are trained on and follow established SOPs and guidelines. Assigns work schedules, ensures completion of work assignments within accepted time frames, conducts ongoing assessments of attendance, participates in employee disciplinary action and completes performance evaluations. Prepares and submits all necessary documentation, verifying completion and quality of the outlined tasks.Trains and mentors direct reports. Communicates effectively with other ARP staff and management to ensure good facility operations. Attends meetings with management and research staff
- Applies knowledge of animal biology and husbandry experience to daily care of laboratory animals in accordance with the requirements of each animal species, either through other ARP personnel or directly, including small animals (rodents and lagomorphs), large animals (carnivores, nonhuman primates, farm animal species, etc.), specialized colonies (pathogen free, germ free, biohazard, fish etc.) and facility operations (mechanical cage processing, equipment upkeep, facility renovation, maintenance requests and tracking, transport of equipment and animals, special projects of ARP management, etc.)
- Requires integrity and dedication to complete tasks to the best of ability, follow all procedures, and document work accurately, knowing there may not be direct oversight to verify. Focuses on the Animal lives that depend on the work quality. Organizes and guides staff efficiently, works with others, communicates effectively, and solves problems. Works as a team and looks for ways to increase efficiency and quality. Requires accountability and integrity
