What are the responsibilities and job description for the ANIMAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I position at University of Alabama, Birmingham?
Animal Lab Technicians are responsible for the husbandry of all animals used in ongoing research projects at UAB. This role is critical for the university to achieve standard care of animals used in research. Job is an apprenticeship in laboratory animal technology. Provides training and experience toward acquiring competence in caring for laboratory animals of different species and specialized colonies. Receives continuous training and experience towards acquiring competence in caring for laboratory animals of different species and specialized colonies (i.e. pathogen free, germ free, and biohazard, etc.)
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Applies general knowledge of animal biology, husbandry, and animal facility operations to the function of a specialized division of ARP in accordance with requirements and established procedures. Management of species could vary dependent upon specialized group, but may include working with species within aquatic tanks, isolators, containment, quarantine, etc. and/or support equipment/operations
- Maintains knowledge of any training general requirements set forth within ARP and/or related to the specialized area
- Serves as specialized area contact and as a resource for any and all staff and guests
- Performs other duties as assigned
Hourly Wage: $15.00 (non-negotiable)
High School diploma or GED required
All external candidates must pass a Drug & TB Skin Test
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Candidate has good Communication skills
- Candidate is a self-starter with a good work ethic
- Candidate is in good physical condition with the ability to lift 50 or more pounds
