The University of Arizona (UArizona) College of Medicine – Tucson invites applications for the position of Chief, Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine and Director of the Sarver Heart Center. With 26 core faculty, the Division of Cardiology is a comprehensive academic clinical division with established community partnerships in a wide variety of areas, and research excellence driven, in particular, by the Sarver Heart Center. Building on an established partnership with Banner Health, the fourth largest non-profit healthcare system in the U.S., the Division is well-positioned to expand its range of clinical services to include general and preventative cardiology, cardiac imaging, structural heart and interventional procedures, cardiac electrophysiology, advanced heart failure therapies and cardiac intensive care.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine as Director of the Sarver Heart Center and to the Chair of the Department of Medicine as the Division Chief, the incumbent will work collaboratively with the leaders of the College and Banner to further the tripartite mission of achieving excellence in clinical care, education, and individual and team-based research. This individual will be a visionary, accomplished leader with demonstrated achievements in cardiovascular research and clinical operations and will be comfortable setting ambitious goals and strategy. This individual is expected to be actively involved in significant philanthropic and outreach activities that has been a cornerstone of the Sarver Heart Center; practice transparent, collaborative leadership, and create a culture of mentorship, scholarship and innovation including effective partnerships with community agencies, health-related organizations, and governmental entities, with a focus on faculty recruitment and retention efforts that support the departments objectives.

- Provide leadership and management of day-to-day operations of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Sarver Heart Center.
- The Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine is responsible for recruitment, management, compensation, and retention of faculty in consideration of UA, UAHS, College, and B—UMG strategic plans and initiatives in balance of the multiple, tripartite mission of the University.
- The Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine will collaborate with Academic Affairs and other educational offices at the College to ensure the department and his/her faculty are advancing the mission of the medical student, graduate student, and graduate medical education teaching programs.
- The Chief is responsible for maintaining liaison with other clinical and/or basic science departments to foster an integrated teaching environment for the College.
- The Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine/Sarver Heart Director has the responsibility to encourage and support research creativity and productivity within the department, across the College and UAHS and with the College’s key partners.
- Provide leadership oversight and effective management of an active program of independent, extramurally funded basic, translational, or clinical research in area of research expertise/specialization.
- The Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine is the clinical role model and leader of the department’s clinical activities. The Chief works with the Dean, Department Head, and the B—UMG CEO to coordinate the clinical activities of the department. The Chief is responsible for maintaining appropriate standards of care appropriate to the discipline.
- Provide direct patient care in the inpatient and/or ambulatory (outpatient) setting as a licensed and fully credentialed provider as a member of Banner—University Medical Group.
- The Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine/Sarver Heart Director is responsible for ensuring the fiscal accountability and sustainability of the division and center.
- The Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine/Sarver Heart Director is responsible for encouraging and supporting diversity among a department’s constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, and acceptance and work in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
- MD, DO, or equivalent.
- Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine/Medical Subspecialties and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
- Three to five years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.
- Demonstrated track record of distinction in teaching, clinical care, and/or research in an academic department of medicine or equivalent environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments, and specialties.
- Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students.
- A record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, measure, and improve productivity and outcomes, and undertake appropriate business strategies to achieve division, unit department and/or enterprise goals.
- If the individual selected for employment does NOT currently hold a faculty title with The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson, he/she will be required to obtain faculty status. This will include obtaining letters of recommendation and review by the appropriate College review committee.
