Summary of Job Duties :

The University of Arkansas Press acquisitions internship is designed to give students the opportunity to experience the professional life of an acquiring editor at a university press. Interns will learn how academic publishers collaborate with writers, researchers, and other publishers to commission, discover, and acquire new and existing content and prepare it for publication and marketing.

Overview

The program is designed to last one semester, during which the intern will keep a consistent schedule of weekly hours while classes are in session. Upon complete of the internship participants will be well equipped for an entry-level position in a variety of publishing environments and will have developed a working knowledge of the following elements of developing scholarly and creative work.

The role of university presses in scholarly communication :

Publishing disciplines and genres

Research in the humanities and the creative arts

Manuscript commissioning and acquisitions

Contracting, rights and permissions

Content development

Book project planning and management

Peer review

Cloud-based document management and image preparation

Style and documentation

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications :

Must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the University of Arkansas.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Strong computer and Internet skills

Command of Microsoft Word

Good typing speed

Evidence of punctuality and reliability

Ability to provide professional and academic references

Ability to engage positively with their coworkers
