Summary of Job Duties:
The MLS I position is an entry-level position within the Blood Bank department. This position is responsible for performance of high complexity testing, and assisting with day-to-day operations. This position will also focus on improving patient outcomes by performing advanced blood banking techniques, dispensing blood and blood components, and educating students. This position will provide direct patient care by supplying the patient with appropriate blood components as determined by accurate testing to ensure the patient receives the appropriate
blood components. This position is also responsible for performing ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, cross-matching units of blood and running the automated ABO/RH and IAT equipment.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, or closely related discipline OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's).
  • Must obtain ASCP certification within 1 year of becoming eligible.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Previous Clinical Laboratory Experience
  • ASCP certification

Additional Information:
Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct patient care by supplying the patient with appropriate blood components
  • Perform ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, crossmatching units of blood and running the automated ABO/RH, IAT equipment
  • Wash red blood cells and platelets
  • Perform platelet crossmatching and platelet antibody identification
  • Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance
  • Issue blood and blood components to the floors
  • Understand the importance of massive trauma and to issue blood and blood components as set forth in the Massive Transfusion Protocol
  • Communicate effectively with the blood bank customers including physicians, nurses, and other UAMS staff members
  • Receive samples and to ensure all samples are appropriately labeled and collected properly for the Blood Bank
  • Assist in training of new staff and students
  • Maintain competency and train on all revised and new policy/procedures in a timely manner
  • Report any deviation from standard operating procedures to the supervisor in a timely manner
  • Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance with 100% accuracy.
  • Assist with performance of quarterly, semi-annual, and annual quality control
