Position description

The UC Berkeley Department of History of Art offers undergraduate and graduate programs that explore the history, theory, and practice of the visual arts in their cultural and historical contexts. The Project Scientist will work with and report to the Principal Investigator, Professor Whitney Davis, on a project funded by the NOMIS Foundation."Depictured Worlds" deals with the possible effects of pictures that people have seen on their natural visual perception of other objects and states of affairs in the world. It integrates art-historical, anthropological, and psychological perspectives, with a strong emphasis on the diversity of global art traditions and possible perceptual cultures (each project participant will have a distinctive area and period specialization) and on the historiography of the thesis. The project seeks to be in dialogue with contemporary perspectives in cross-cultural and transhistorical world art studies. The Project Scientist will work with the PI and other project participants on all aspects of project planning and outcomes, including organizing conferences, workshops, edited publications, and interviews with experts. They will develop an individual research project, potentially to be presented at conferences and published in article and/or book form, focusing on the development and dissemination of American painterly realism. They will also contribute to the project's investigation of the social and psychological impacts of depiction, with emphasis on how this topic has been addressed by art historians in the past and in present global debates. Along with the PI, they will be the project's liaison with academic and museum scholars and institutions in North America.
