Position description

The Quantitative Ecosystem Dynamics group in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley is looking for an Assistant Professional Researcher who will contribute to multiple ongoing projects in the group, with a particular emphasis on ecohydrology and the use of remote sensing observations to infer hydrological controls on ecosystem function.

The Quantitative Ecosystem Dynamics Lab studies terrestrial ecosystems and how they respond to climate variability and long-term change, as well as related feedbacks to the atmosphere through ecosystem carbon sequestration, water use and energy flows.

The Assistant Professional Researcher in this role will also be expected to maintain an active, independent research agenda in the field of eddy covariance and remote sensing science. Research should focus on the collection, processing, and/or analysis of eddy covariance and remote sensing data with the goal of improving understanding of ecosystem greenhouse gas emissions. The Researcher will be expected to collaborate locally, as well as domestic and international colleagues conducting flux research.

Research duties:
Develop an independent research program using remote sensing and eddy covariance flux data to better understand carbon cycling in ecosystems.

Develop a robust publication record and secure grant funding from relevant federal, state, and philanthropic sources.

Specific responsibilities of the position include the following:

Data management and data analysis

Manuscript preparation

Present research at international conferences

Contribute to grant proposals

Mentoring students

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications

At least 3 years of Postdoctoral experience in the flux research area.

Experience leading research teams.

Field experience, preferably including instrument and experimental design experience planning in-person and virtual meetings.

Experience analyzing eddy covariance flux data.

Exceptional organizational skills.

Strong attention to detail.

Strong numerical and communication skills.

A network of professional connections within the FLUXNET community.

Record of peer-reviewed publications.

Strong programming skills in at least one of Python/R/Matlab.

Experience conducting field-based research, preferably with eddy-covariance measurements.

Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.
