Position description

Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Studies (UGIS) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for an instructor to teach UGIS 140: The Hand-Printed Book in Its Historical Context.

UGIS 140 emphasizes practical experience in printing the hand-made book by presenting a historical perspective on the various technologies involved in producing printed books: type founding, paper making, binding, illustration, and the evolution of the printing press itself.

Under the instructor's guidance, students closely examine and discuss original printed books from the Bancroft Library's collections ranging from the 15th century to the present. And as a group, students hand-set and print a small publication on the library's cast-iron presses: the Albion (ca. 1856) and the Reliance (ca. 1913). As students learn how hand-produced books have been made in the west for the last 500 years, they are also taught about the history of the book, using examples from Bancroft's rare books and manuscripts collection.

Teaching UGIS 140 includes holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials, and demonstrating techniques on antique printing presses.

UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC-AFT.
