The Network Operations Engineer is technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure; manages programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Under general direction, the Network Operations Engineer applies advanced professional communications concepts, industry practices and relevant policies, procedures, and objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The Network Operations Engineer determines methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results. The Network Operations Engineer is an experienced and qualified technical professional in the area of configuring, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of local and wide area network, including but not limited to routers, switches, VPN, WI-AN, VolP, authentication servers, load balancers, security technologies and network monitoring tools. The Network Operations Engineer will provide experienced technical support for installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of all network equipment, including software applications applicable to networking. Responsibilities include knowledge of routing protocols, switching technologies, wireless, VPN, authentication servers, and security technologies.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid California driver’s License

  • Cisco Network Certification or equivalent experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

  • 5 years IT infrastructure network experience

  • Large scale network experience with Cisco products and services

  • Advanced knowledge of professional communications and network systems in {he completion of diverse assignments.

  • Advanced knowledge of the practices and techniques of the voice and data field and the ability to determine a course of action based on guidelines.

  • Understands implications of work on other areas.

  • Has highly developed problem-solving skills to independently resolve issues using defined parameters and technical expertise.

  • Clearly understands the communications and network needs of the organization and has skills needed to address those needs.

  • In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 2 and 3 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze highly complex communication hardware and software systems for maintaining a real-time resource that impacts campus/Medical center/OP wide network users.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with network management systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.

  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills of unique issues and problems.

Department Overview

IT Unified Communications Network Services provides planning and implementation activities to deliver Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN), Wireless (LAN) for the entire UC Davis Health enterprise. In response to institutional requirement's the department provides technological leadership and support for the cost-effective use of computers, software and networking to include installation, training and problem resolution

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
