Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- No Minimum Education required.
- 5 years' experience of equine general husbandry and knowledge of disease mitigation associated with horses, including vaccinations, deworming, general hoof care, etc.
- Extensive stallion handling experience, including live-cover breeding.
- Experience using various transportation vehicles, including but not limited to: trucks, trailers, forklifts, electronic carts, etc.
- Knowledge of protocol requirements and skills to collect samples, including stallion live-cover, in support of the USDA-mandated Contagious Equine Metritis program.
- Skills to recognize health problems in horses and communicate these concerns effectively to veterinarians; skills to follow prescribed treatment programs and determine follow-up visitation needs.
- Computer, calendar, email and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with constituent groups and maintain accurate medical records and les.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience executing federal/state/governmental protocols as it pertains to animal movement.
- Equine experience in a clinical or educational environment.
- Supervisory skills in an animal care environment.
- Knowledge and Certification of federal Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) import protocols.

Department Overview
The Center for Equine Health is dedicated to advancing the health, welfare, performance and veterinary care of horses through research, education and public service.
Department Specific Job Scope
Under general direction of the CEH Director and in conjunction with the CEH management team, as a working supervisor, oversee the USDA mandated Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) import program in Davis, the CEH rehabilitation service, as well as daily maintenance operations of the facility ensuring the highest standards of animal care are maintained. Provide animal care, facility, personnel management and instruction in support of programmatic objectives of the CEH. This includes the oversight of all feeding, cleaning and grounds/facility maintenance of an equine facility to include maintaining enclosures, exercise areas, and clinical spaces. Oversee all equipment and facility maintenance and repair, as well as involvement with capital improvements and monitoring of projects. Utilize a variety of agents to clean, disinfect and sanitize in and around animal rooms and areas prior to receipt of animals and on a scheduled basis. Instruct undergraduates and graduate students in equine husbandry and care as needed. Responsible for maintaining the jump mare herd and stallion live-cover breeding in compliance with all departmental, campus, state and federal requirements.

Position requires safe handling and restraint of mares, stallions and foals of various breeds, ages, size and temperament. Work exible schedule including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, sometimes on short-notice to meet operational needs. Work in and maintain biosecurity by washing hands and/or wearing protective clothing and limiting or eliminating contact with outside horses. Valid CA driver's license to transport horses via truck and trailer. Work in an animal care environment that will contain dander, dust, animal waste and similarly unpleasant substances.
