Job Summary

Reporting to the Academic Director, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) oversees the daily operations and overall administration of TERC. This role involves strategic planning and innovative management across key areas, including:
- Financial and business operations
- Pre- and post-award contracts and grants administration
- Human Resources (staff and academic personnel)
- Information Technology
- Research and teaching support
- Student affairs
- Safety protocols
- Facility and space management
- Compliance with administrative policies and procedures

The CAO supports the development of outreach and public relations initiatives and programs while providing leadership in fiscal management, operations, facilities, and HR/personnel administration. This position works in partnership with the Office of Research Operations Team, Budget & Institutional Analysis (BIA), Accounting & Financial Services, and other key campus partners in the development and implementation of financial and strategic initiatives. Ensures effective support for staff, research projects, and both short- and long-term strategic planning goals.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree (in a relevant discipline such as finance, accounting or business administration) or equivalent work experience.
  • Five years or more of increasingly responsible business management experience to effectively and ethically manage and oversee complex operations in the areas of strategic planning and analysis, budget and finance, human resources, space and facility requirements, information technology, and teaching/research laboratory needs in an academic environment.
  • Experience in complex and strategic financial planning and analysis to manage financial operations in the areas of significant budgets, federal, state, and private sponsor funding, contract and grant administration, recharge rate development, and generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
  • Experience with the principles and practices of human resource management including at least two (2) years in a strategic HR role, leading HR initiatives including workforce planning, talent acquisition, performance management, employee and labor relations, organizational development, and/or diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Working knowledge and experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, and communicating policy and procedures in all areas pertinent to academic/research-related operations and programs or other business-related operations.
  • Strong demonstrated supervisory, conflict resolution, and team building skills to effectively recruit, supervise, train, evaluate, motivate, resolve problems/conflicts, conduct performance management, discipline, and build an effective service-oriented, team environment.
  • Experience using interpersonal, oral and written communicate skills to share information with all levels of personnel and with diverse populations within the Unit, campus, and outside agencies.
  • Strategic planning, analytical and program evaluation skills to lead business-process improvement, organizational-change initiatives, and information-systems implementations with accuracy and attention to details.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in strategic planning to lead business-process improvement, organizational-change initiatives, and information-systems implementations with accuracy and attention to details.
  • Experience developing organizational structures, delegating, developing policies and procedures and implementation.
  • Experience in the principles and practices of business management to effectively and ethically manage and oversee complex operations in the areas of space and facility requirements, information technology, and teaching/research laboratory needs.
  • Experience analyzing complex information and problems in an objective manner, and providing recommendations and alternatives to help inform the decision-making process, establish priorities, select appropriate course of action, and resolve conflicts.
  • Possess political acumen and business and leadership savvy, and demonstrated ability to collaborate and lead in a responsible, value-driven, high-quality and cost-effective manner.

Department Overview

The Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is a Special Research Program large complex enhanced Organized Research Unit (ORU) under the Office of Research. The ORU has 240 affiliated faculty, professional researchers, adjunct professors, academic and staff support personnel from all colleges and schools on the UC Davis campus to collaborate on environmental issues of interest to policy makers, agency personnel and academics. TERC is located at both Lake Tahoe and on the Davis main campus, and has approximately 30 staff, affiliated faculty, and students. This position would be based in Davis but expected to be focused on the Tahoe campus. TERC is dedicated to research, education and public outreach on lakes and their surrounding watersheds and airsheds. TERC provides critical scientific information to help understand, restore, and sustain the Lake Tahoe Basin and other lake systems worldwide. TERC conducts environmental research in aquatic and terrestrial environments at Lake Tahoe, and multiple other locations throughout California and globally.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Valid California driver's license to travel between campus locations and off-campus locations to attend meetings, seminars, conferences and for other business needs. Work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed to meet operational needs. Vacation may be limited or restricted during peak periods such as fiscal year-end close (June/July).
