Description
The Department of Education is committed to the department's mission to advance social justice in and through education. In the spirit of the Department of Education, the mission of the undergraduate major is to prepare students to examine current issues of social justice through an educational lens. Students will come to understand and analyze social problems and solutions by pairing multidisciplinary knowledge and skills building with experiential learning; developing students who are critically thinking, socially engaged and civically minded. We aim to improve public schooling across a wide variety of social contexts in Los Angeles, our state, our nation, and globally.
The purpose of the major is to develop future generations of scholars, teachers, information professionals, and institutional leaders who are able to transform their fields. The degree program is guided by the principles of individual responsibility and social justice, an ethic of caring, and commitment to the communities we serve.
SUMMARY
Reporting to the Vice Chair of Undergraduate Education and the Chair of the Department of Education, this position will be responsible for three broad areas : course development, mentoring and instruction; Capstone development and implementation, and strategic planning and development.
Course Development, Mentoring, and Instruction
- Develop, plan, prepare, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to the Education major as the principal instructor or co-instructor.
- Mentor and advise Department of Education students related to their program of study, research interests / independent studies as well as potential career opportunities.
Capstone Development and Implementation
Strategic Planning and Development
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualifications for the position are a doctorate in Education or a related field; successful course development and project direction; knowledge of research and trends in education; practical and theoretical teaching / mentoring experience at the university level. Prior experience in higher education plus administrative experience in an education academic program is highly preferred.
