Department Overview
Benefits Accounting is responsible for financial management and reporting functions in connection with the University of California Retirement System (UCRS), including the University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP), the University of California Retirement Savings Program (UCRSP), the Health and Welfare Program and the University of California Retiree Health Benefit Program. These functions include financial transactions, financial reporting and analysis, financial audit coordination and internal control assessment and monitoring.
Position Summary
The Benefits Accounting team, under the direction of the Associate Vice President - Systemwide Controller, offers an entry level position interested in exploring a career in accounting and higher education. The University of California is renowned the world over for combining academic and research excellence with unparalleled student access. As part of the Benefits Accounting team, the Accountant will use and apply accounting practices and standards in analyzing and reporting accounting data. The entry-level professional will learn to use concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity; work on assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. Employees at this level are expected to acquire the skills and knowledge to perform more advanced work following an agreed upon time in position, through defined training and development planning.
Key Responsibilities
- 55% Accounting :
- In collaboration with the Retirement Administration Service Center (RASC), coordinate and review retiree payment history for over payments.
- Research, resolve, and respond to requests related to stop-payment / replacement checks, returned checks, historical payment information, bank-related inquiries.
- Maintain accounting spreadsheets.
- Ensure retirement system-generated general ledger files are accurate and available for processing in the general accounting system.
- Research and resolve general ledger file validation errors.
- Review incoming check and lockbox deposits and prepare corresponding journal entries.
- Upload general ledger files and prepare / update entries in the general accounting system, as needed.
- 30% Banking :
- Conduct initial review of bank fees; research payment status.
- Review daily bank direct deposit notices of change and returns of deposit.
- Process requests from RASC Member Services in order to issue replacement checks.
- Prepare check cancellation requests with the bank to remove from "positive pay".
- Update the stale-dated check log for bank reconciliation.
- Retrieve and save bank information, including the monthly bank account and client analysis statements for review or historical purposes.
- Receive checks from RASC related to the UC retirement plan and UC health and welfare benefit accounts and process them for deposit at the bank.
- 10% Reporting :
- Gather data and create monthly reports from the UC systems, maintain payment counts and other totals history.
- Prepare ad hoc reports, as needed.
- 5% Under direct supervision, responsible for providing analytical support for simple to moderate accounting projects.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
This position has been approved for a hybrid work arrangement. The person hired must report to work on-site at UC's Office of the President (UCOP) , located in Oakland, CA, three days per week, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, subject to change. The person hired will be required to reside in the state of California.
