Associate Professor of Teaching,
Director of Computer Assisted Assessment and Instruction,
and Associate Director of the University Writing Program

The University Writing Program (UWP) at the University of California, Riverside, is seeking applicants for an Associate Professor of Teaching, who will serve as Director of Computer Assisted Assessment and Instruction and Associate Director of the University Writing Program.

Anticipated Start Date: July 1, 2025

Position Description:
The Associate Professor of Teaching, Director of Computer Assisted Assessment and Instruction is responsible for managing the UCR Analytical Writing Placement Exam for incoming students at UCR and for directing the placement of those students in the appropriate writing courses to satisfy the University Entry Level Writing Requirement. The UCR Analytical Writing Placement Exam is administered primarily through online administration, and requires significant technical expertise. The Director will also be responsible for "L" courses, online workshops attached to the developmental writing courses, and for facilitating technical course design and liaising with XCITE and other campus instructional resources in order to support our UWP instructors.

The Director of Computer Assisted Assessment and Instruction participates in the administration and scoring of the UCR Analytical Writing Placement Examination. This person also helps lead the fall orientation and assists the Program Director with projects such as the grading handbook and program evaluation.

Candidates with an advanced degree in instructional design or a related field and with a degree or demonstrated expertise in language acquisition with an emphasis in teaching English to multilingual students and English language learners will be given priority of consideration. Significant experience with the administration of writing assessment and placement exams is preferred. Experience in generative artificial intelligence technologies and their impact on writing instruction, with assistive technology or other technologies supporting accessibility or universal design, working with academic support programs, program assessment and evaluation, and facilitating instructor's use of learning management systems are all valuable assets for this position.

Classroom teaching in addition to the assessment and administrative responsibilities:
Instruction and deployment of the online "L" courses for developmental writing, equivalent to four courses of regular composition class instruction, one 4-unit composition course, and administration of the UCR Analytical Writing Placement Exam.

Other responsibilities include ongoing interaction with the other UWP Assistant and Associate directors, collaboration with Division of Undergraduate Education staff on student success initiatives, using data to inform practice, including the occasional exchange of one or more duties, as supervised by the Program Director.

Professor of Teaching Series:
Professors of Teaching are faculty positions designed to meet the long-term instructional needs of the University. All appointments in this series require achievement in three areas: teaching, scholarly professional activity, and service.
Professors of Teaching are members of the academic senate when appointed at 100%. An appointee in this series is assigned a heavier instructional load in recognition that the amount of research or other professional achievement expected is less than for ladder rank faculty. Teaching responsibilities vary according to the nature of the appointment

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is required.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Record of outstanding instruction, both in person and online.
  • Senior level scholarly professional activity and experience, distinction in the field, and proven record of exceptional University service.
  • Experience developing and deploying online instruction attached to developmental writing courses.
  • Experience facilitating technical course design and liaising with campus technology initiatives and other campus instructional resources in order to support instructors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with an advanced degree in instructional design or a related field and with a degree or demonstrated expertise in language acquisition with an emphasis in teaching English to multilingual students and English language learners will be given priority of consideration
  • Familiarity with the Analytical Writing Placement Exam of the UC system or other comparable writing assessment practices at comparable institutions.
  • Evidence of professional leadership, and innovation.
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in instructional and pedagogical practice and through service to academic institutions.
  • Experience in generative artificial intelligence technologies and their impact on writing instruction, with assistive technology or other technologies supporting accessibility or universal design, working with academic support programs, program assessment and evaluation, and facilitating instructor's use of learning management systems are all valuable assets for this position.
