Salary range: The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position at 100% time is $75,900 to $84,200.
Percent time: 100
Anticipated start: Start date is negotiable but ideally May 1, 2025 or sometime after.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one (1) year with a very strong potential for annual renewal, based on performance and available funding.

Position description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a full time Assistant Project Scientist with an anticipated start date of early May 2025.

The Assistant Project Scientist will provide independent contribution to leading research efforts on NITEC related click chemistry to generate light- and ONOO-responsive probes, polymers, nanoparticles, hydrogels, and devices. Duties include synthesizing bio-functional polymers via controlled polymerization strategies (ROMP, RAFT, ATRP) for fabrication of stimuli-responsive hydrogels and smart devices. This position requires that you work with collaborators and lab members, guide and train them on all aspects of NITEC related click chemistry.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD or foreign equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or equivalent STEM field.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
  • 4 or more years of experience with controlled polymerizations (ROMP)
  • 6 months or more experience with cell viability assays
  • 4 or more years of experience with Organic synthesis skills
  • 4 or more years of experience in spectroscopy (UV-Vis, plate readers)
  • 4 or more years of Polymer Characterization (SEC-MALS, DLS)
  • 4 or more years of Analytical chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (ESI, LCMS, MALDI)
Preferred qualifications
  • Computations skills (MATLAB, Python, or equivalent)
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong record of student mentorship/leadership
  • TEM experience
