Position description

The UCSB Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is seeking an open rank position, with an intention to hire a highly creative and productive individual with research and teaching interests in any area of chemistry or biochemistry. Applications at any rank will be considered, including tenure-track and tenured faculty positions at the level of Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor. Successful applicants at the Assistant level will be expected to develop strong and creative research programs and to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful applicants at the Associate and Full levels are expected to have demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, service, and leadership. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

This position is a part of an ongoing effort by the department to build its research and educational mission. We seek an individual with a demonstrated success in developing a rigorous, well-funded research program that can span any area of chemistry and biochemistry, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and who supports diversity, equity and inclusion. Responsibilities of faculty members include teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, recruitment, supervision, and mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, participation in university service and professional activities. Successful candidates may have a record of collaborative research, and will be able to leverage synergies within and between the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and collaborative departments, and research units, such as Chemical Engineering, Materials, Mechanical Engineering, the Marine Science Institute, and Biological Engineering.

UCSB is home to the NSF BioPACIFIC Materials Innovation Platform (MIP) that provides access to a pioneering infrastructure for the development of advanced bioderived materials, the nation's first NSF Quantum Foundry for development of quantum materials with scalable entanglement and protected coherence, one of the top NSF Materials Research Science & Engineering Centers (MRSECs) in the country and a new NSF BioFoundry for advancing modern biology and biotechnology. Building on these strengths, we are seeking new colleagues to help establish research programs and collaborative partnerships in such areas as green chemistry, energy and sustainability, functional materials, machine learning, quantum information science, synthetic biology, systems biology, biomolecular design and well beyond.

In 2024-25, UC Santa Barbara departments are partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to launch a special faculty recruitment initiative named after Benjamin Banneker, the 18th-century African American mathematician, astronomer, antiracist, engineer, ecologist, and peace advocate. Funded by an Advancing Faculty Diversity grant from the UC Office of the President, the Banneker Initiative will recruit scholars, scientists, and engineers whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary work would take place within the community of concerns exemplified by Banneker's intellectual, ethical, and social commitments as an African American scientist, especially his desire to advance scientific and humanistic knowledge for the public good. With the goal of creating a diverse community around such concerns, applicants may be eligible to be fellows in the Benjamin Banneker Initiative. The community of Banneker Fellows will receive funding for cohort building and professional development activities, including enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Faculty Success Program, proposal writing training, and seed grants.
