About The Department

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, within the Physical Sciences Division, offers undergraduate (B.A., B.S.) and graduate (Ph.D.) degrees in Astrophysics, with a program for non-STEM undergraduates leading to a Minor in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The department has 32 teaching faculty, in addition to emeriti and research faculty.

Job Summary

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to operate within the Metamaterials Laboratory. The ideal candidate would work with staff and other lab personnel to conduct research and complete operations. This position will help with tasks including setting up parts (lenses and optical filters) on the CNC machines, setting up the tooling and calibrating the CNC machines, producing the metamaterial optics, and troubleshooting issues with the production facility which includes a compressed air system, a water filtration system, and other subsystems. This position would be responsible and will be expected to manage their efforts, and transparently report their status to their supervisor in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and operate the metamaterials laboratory.
  • Manufacture metamaterial optical elements.
  • Assist with the assembly of optical systems.
  • Streamline production efficiency.
  • Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments in a team environment.
  • Provides routine or standardized laboratory duties by collecting data in support of research projects under direct supervision.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analysis of data and with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).



  • Work Experience:

    Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.



  • Certifications:

    Preferred Qualifications

    Education:

    • High school diploma or GED.

    Technical Skills Or Knowledge:

    • Willingness to learn Python to be able to work with existing code.
    • Ability to work with FNAL support staff to maintain the production system which includes air compressors, a water filtration system, and the CNC dicing saws.

    Working Conditions

    • Lift up to 40 pounds.
    • Climb stairs and ladders and stand for up to 4 hours per day.
    • Willingness to work occasional overtime on short notice in response to operational and emergency requirements.
    • Legally operate cars and light trucks.
