The Assistant Director for Student Employment will develop and lead a comprehensive vision for student employment, ensuring it meets the needs of approximately 7,500 students working on-campus annually and prepares them for the 21st-century workforce. This role involves establishing and overseeing a comprehensive strategy that ensures equitable access to high-impact on-campus job opportunities and maintaining a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
There are 3 additional areas of responsibility: campus partnerships, supervision and leadership. This position will be the main point of contact between Career Services and Financial Aid, with additional working partnerships with Student Affairs Communications and Campus Human Resources. This role will serve on the Career Services’ Leadership Team, oversee a department committee, manage the departmental budget for student employees, and supervise a professional staff member. The Assistant Director will represent CU Student Employment at various conferences and actively participate in the National Student Employment Association.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Student Employment Strategy
- Develop and lead a vision of student employment that meets the needs of students working on campus (an average of 7,500 each year) and that will prepare them for the 21st century workforce.
- Establish and oversee strategic and measurable goals for student employment with a focus on ensuring equitable access to high impact student employment opportunities that help students achieve post-graduate success.
- Identify, track and analyze key performance metrics related to student employment activities and partnerships, generating insights to inform strategic decision-making and program enhancements.
- Stay abreast of the student employee landscape and advocate for critical changes (such as increased hourly wages or policies) on behalf of student employees and/or campus departments.
- Demonstrate a dedication to an inclusive environment for all and advocate that on-campus job opportunities are equally accessible to all students.
- Maintain and build knowledge of career development (rooted in NACE competencies and career readiness), employment and recruiting trends, college student development, and other related topics as appropriate.
- Convene and lead an ongoing working group of supervisors of student employees to change the culture of student employment to be a high impact practice
- Represent On-Campus Student Employment at CU Boulder regionally, and beyond at conferences and other professional development events.
- Actively participate in the National Student Employment Association.
- Partner with Campus Human Resources to:
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, university, and departmental regulations.
- Build and implement a performance appraisal framework for student employees.
- Implement and maintain a conflict resolution framework for student employees and their supervisors.
- Support pipeline hiring program and identify opportunities to develop full-time employee engagement opportunities for student employees.
- Partner with Financial Aid to promote the benefits of hiring work study students.
- Serve as a consultant for on-campus employers for student employee development related questions and triage employee relations issues to Human Resources.
- Serve as a liaison to on-campus departments with student employee needs. Develop and nurture relationships within the programs and departments, building deep, functional knowledge of the needs of that program/department and consult on standard methodologies when enhancing and/or creating new student employee roles.
- Supervise the Student Employment Coordinator who is responsible for maintaining on-campus employers in Handshake, the Student Employee of the Year Award process, resources for student employee supervisors, and the On Campus Job fair.
- Set performance and project objectives, provide coaching, feedback, and guidance throughout assignments, and assess performance through an annual review.
- Participate in the Career Services’ Leadership team which includes ongoing professional development, weekly meetings, collaborating on initiatives, and applicable committees
- Serve as co-chair of Career Services student staff advisory board.
- Lead the Career Services’ Student Supervisors Committee; ensure Career Services’ student employees are engaged in work that is high-impact and internship-like and that students achieve professional success post-graduation.
- Maintain and update department student employee budget. Consult with Career Services’ student supervisors on pay rates, position responsibilities, and growth opportunities for student staff.
- Collaborate with the Employer Relations Team to cultivate an understanding of off-campus employer needs and foster a strategic alignment that bridges the gap between campus employment and workforce development.
- Partner closely with MySkills program manager to ensure foundational skills are integrated into student employee initiatives including job descriptions, resources, and trainings.
- Attend Career Services’ departmental meetings and applicable events and meetings hosted by Student Affairs’ and/or Campus.
- Support All Hands on Deck events.
- Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm (7:30-4:30pm during the summer months). Hybrid work: minimum of 3 days on campus and up to 2 days off campus each week. Some weekend and evening work may be required when it aligns with the strategic goals of Student Affairs and/or Career Services.
- The salary range is $71,000 - $75,000 per year.

- Bachelor's degree.
- 5 years of professional or relevant work experience (Career Services, HR, or Higher Education Student Development).
