Job Summary

The Community Safety Official Supervisors within the Patrol Division serves to support the overall mission of the University and CU Police Department. Community Safety Official Supervisors collaborate with many community partners and campus entities to address safety and security concerns for CU Boulder’s campus.

This position must communicate regularly with clients, building proctors, facilities management, internal department units, and other campus resources regarding safety and security protocols of academic /general use buildings, and open spaces on campus, standard processes, and safety/security resources, and must maintain regular liaison with the Police Department and Patrol Division, especially regarding any irregular or suspicious activity. This position focuses on providing building integrity, access control for campus buildings, routine locking of internal and external sections of buildings, report writing and supervising Community Safety Officials whom patrol buildings and campus. This position conducts routine patrols of campus for visible deterrence of criminal activity and activity seeks to collaborate with campus partners to address safety and security concerns. This position conducts budget review and approval for subordinate staff, issue performance plans and annual performance evaluations as well as periodic coaching and progress reviews. The main function of this position is to provide operational oversight and coordination within the CSO unit and the patrol division. In support of their supervisor this position may review fiscal budget plans and make purchases aligned with university procurement requirements to meet equipment and training needs of the Community Safety Operations unit and other duties as assigned. This position also exists to recruit, hire, train, and supervise classified staff within the work unit.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Supervision

  • Directly manage CSO classified staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, and oversight.
  • Fulfill staffing requests in accordance with campus policies, building proctors, or through formal review by the Patrol Sergeant.
  • Oversee coordination, communication, and job design for assignments beyond standard patrol duties.
  • Provide and review annual performance plans, conduct coaching/progress reviews, and issue annual performance evaluations.
  • Review report submissions and data collection from CSOs, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with grammar, spelling, and security standards.
  • Prepare procedures and general orders for review and perform other administrative duties.
  • Manage scheduling, work assignments, and resolve personnel issues as they arise.

Security Operations & Patrol Oversight

  • Supervise CSOs responsible for lock/unlock procedures and routine security patrols on foot, bike, or by vehicle.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels, scheduling, payroll, and equipment management (radios, keys, etc.).
  • Conduct site inspections, monitor radio traffic, review shift reports, and provide coaching to ensure high-quality service.
  • Collaborate with police personnel and campus constituents to address and resolve safety and security concerns.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to support security needs and special events.

Training & Development

  • Develop and maintain a structured training program for new CSOs and student staff.
  • Ensure training covers necessary skills, procedures, and databases for effective security operations.
  • Implement training initiatives as designated by the Patrol Sergeant, ensuring continuous staff development.
  • Align training plans with performance expectations and track all completed training per CUPD policy.

Budget & Procurement

  • Review fiscal budget plans and oversee purchases aligned with university procurement policies.
  • Ensure all expenditures follow CUPD policies for training, uniforms, and equipment needs.

Other Duties

  • Support additional Security Services Department operations and other divisions as needed.
  • Adapt to evolving operational needs, schedule changes, and unforeseen circumstances.

What You Should Know

  • This department operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Must be available to work various shifts when necessary, including overnights, swing shifts, weekends, holidays, etc. Regular patrol hours: Fall and Spring Semesters: Sunday-Wednesday, 2:00 PM-Midnight. Extended Finals Hours: 6:00 PM-2:00 AM (specific dates provided each semester). Breaks and holidays: Coverage during limited hours as determined (e.g., Fall/Spring Break: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM). Summer hours: Established by March 21 annually.
  • Contingencies: In case of unexpected absence or emergencies, coverage will be reassigned per DPS protocols. In addition to regular pay, shift differentials are available as follows: Weekend Shift Differential: 20% for hours worked on weekends. For Fridays, the weekend shift differential applies to all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Second Shift Differential (Monday through Thursday): 7.5%. For Monday through Thursday, the second shift differential applies to all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Overtime will be calculated in addition to any applicable shift differential.
  • Operates University Vehicle, requires active driver's license.

What We Can Offer

  • Starting salary range is $60,000 - $70,000.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.

  • Adaptability & Professionalism – Flexibility to work variable hours and handle unpredictable security needs while maintaining ethical conduct.

Essential Services

This position is designated “essential/critical services.” The incumbent is required to respond to requests for work during campus emergencies (snow, wind, rain, flood and any other natural or man-made event) and report to work for regularly assigned shifts during emergency campus closures.
