Job Summary

The Division of Public Safety at CU Boulder encourages applications for Community Safety Officials (CSOs)! These roles in the Security Services Department supports the mission of the Division of Public Safety and the University of Colorado Boulder. They collaborate with campus partners to address safety, well-being, and security concerns.

This position regularly communicates with clients, building proctors, Facilities Management, internal department units, and other campus resources regarding safety protocols, standard processes, and available resources. CSOs maintain a close liaison with the Police Department and Patrol Division, especially concerning irregular or suspicious activity.

Key responsibilities include ensuring building security, managing access control, locking internal and external areas, and documenting safety concerns for appropriate follow-up. CSOs conduct proactive campus patrols to deter criminal activity and work closely with campus partners to enhance safety and security.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Campus Security & Engagement

  • Lock and unlock building doors as required, using walking, biking, or limited driving.
  • Conduct proactive security rounds to identify and address safety and security concerns.
  • Identify, document, and report safety, security, policy, or law violations for appropriate resolution.
  • Use security radios, flashlights, and other basic equipment as needed.
  • Maintain an understanding of security technology to support various university systems.
  • Engage with community members to provide assistance with questions, wayfinding, and ambassador-like functions.
  • Assist in planning and implementing community engagement activities that align with the Security Services Department’s mission.
  • Participate in training and may assist with non-criminal follow-ups, reports, and witness interviews.
  • Respond to system alarms, fire calls, chemical spills, or assist with crowd control during emergencies.
  • Provide security escorts for faculty, staff, and students as needed.
  • Fulfill other contractual assignments to support community safety and Security Services Department responsibilities.
  • Work various shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, in diverse environmental conditions.
  • Support unplanned incidents or special events as required.

Safety Documentation

  • Accurately enter data and submit reports in a timely manner.
  • Ensure reports are written with correct grammar, spelling, and clarity.
  • Use database systems proficiently for accurate report submissions.
  • Maintain knowledge of CU policies and basic Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.) for report accuracy.
  • Contribute to Clery Act compliance by recognizing and documenting reportable incidents.

Other Duties

  • Assist other areas or divisions of the Security Services Department as needed.
  • Adapt to changes in schedule or duties based on operational needs or unforeseen circumstances.

What You Should Know

  • This department operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Must be available to work various shifts when necessary, including overnights, swing shifts, weekends, holidays, etc. Regular patrol hours: Fall and Spring Semesters: Sunday-Wednesday, 2:00 PM-Midnight. Extended Finals Hours: 6:00 PM-2:00 AM (specific dates provided each semester). Breaks and holidays: Coverage during limited hours as determined (e.g., Fall/Spring Break: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM). Summer hours: Established by March 21 annually.
  • Contingencies: In case of unexpected absence or emergencies, coverage will be reassigned per DPS protocols. In addition to regular pay, shift differentials are available as follows: Weekend Shift Differential: 20% for hours worked on weekends. For Fridays, the weekend shift differential applies to all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Second Shift Differential (Monday through Thursday): 7.5%. For Monday through Thursday, the second shift differential applies to all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Overtime will be calculated in addition to any applicable shift differential.
  • Operates University Vehicles, requires active driver's license.

What We Can Offer

  • The starting salary range for this position is $50,000 - $56,925.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • One year of related experience in safety/security operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Awareness of mental health encounters and resources on campus.
  • Good writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to walk long distances and stand for long-periods of time at a time.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact with student, staff, faculty and visitors.

Essential Services

This position is designated “essential/critical services.” The incumbent is required to respond to requests for work during campus emergencies (snow, wind, rain, flood and any other natural or man-made event) and report to work for regularly assigned shifts during emergency campus closures.
