Job Description :
The physician who fills this position will develop a novel clinical practice in Physiatry (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) focused on the rehabilitation of Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders and peripheral neuropathy problems. This individual will provide CNS-related rehabilitation associated with neurological disorders including Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, brain injury, spinal cord diseases, disorders of consciousness and language, swallowing problems, hypoxic brain injury, and central pain syndromes. Together with a physical therapist trained in the physical therapy of neurological disorders, this individual will develop neurorehabilitation programs that may include: gait and movement training for patients with Parkinson's disease, rehabilitation of hemiparetic patients after stroke, possibly using novel modalities such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, a brain injury rehab program with focus on cognitive rehabilitation and driving assessment, interface with Occupational Therapy to manage seating and wheelchair issues for patients with ALS and other degenerative neuropathic and muscle diseases, and other CNS-oriented rehabilitation. The individual will also evaluate patients using electroneurodiagnostic testing (EMG and nerve conduction studies) and treat neuromuscular diseases consistent with prior training in neuromuscular testing and neuromuscular disorders.
This individual will teach medical students, medical residents and neurology residents in the outpatient clinic and hospital.
Education and Training Requirements :
The successful candidate will be an MD physiatrist who has completed residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and should be board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Fellowship training in a sub-specialty such as neuromuscular medicine, spinal cord injury medicine, or pain medicine is highly desirable.
