At UConn Health, the Neuroscience Department seeks to hire a Special Payroll- Research Technician.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of an assistant professor in the performance of research duties and laboratory management. Lab website: https://health.uconn.edu/synapse/
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May lead/supervise lower-level employees as assigned.
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:
High School diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year of experience in a laboratory/medical setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Applicants with prior bio-medical laboratory wet-lab research experience, including pipetting, cryosectioning, histology, and microscopy are preferred. Candidates with experience performing assay of RNA in situ hybridization will be given preference.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (training to be provided as needed):
Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include tissue culture, cell separation methods, DNA and protein electrophoretic separations, molecular biology or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.
Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, incubator, spectrophotometer, light microscope confocal microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood for tissue culture experiments.
Functions as a laboratory manager, places orders for supplies, keeps equipment in good repair, and works with PI to update and write laboratory protocols as needed.
Maintains the laboratory's mouse colony, which involves handling, husbandry, genotyping, and record keeping.
Carries out experiments with mice, including intracranial injection of recombinant viruses (survival surgery), numerous behavior assays, perfusions, cryosectioning, histology, and general husbandry.
Performs immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry assays.
Operates lab computers for data entry and maintains accurate data records.
Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
Prepares solutions, reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Performs related duties are required.
Use of autoclave.
Affinity purifies proteins from cell culture media for future biochemistry experiments.
Creating and maintaining a webpage for the laboratory.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety, as appropriate.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbents in this class may be required to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents in this class may occasionally be required to lift heavy objects such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes or glassware; may be exposed to such hazards as broken glass, toxic vapors, and toxic or disease carrying substances.
SCHEDULE:
40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. with a 30-minute unpaid meal break.
Hourly Rate: $20
