Duties & Responsibilities
(*Essential Functions)
1. *In collaboration with the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture, produce an educational framework designed to increase the number of new farmers who can sustain profitable long-term careers in regenerative (e.g., “Whole Farm System Approach”) food production in Hawaii.
2. *Initiate and conduct strategic and outcomes-focused discussions with farmer training providers and agricultural industry stakeholders to solicit their recommendations regarding curricula, equipment, technology, budget, skill-building, business planning, and industry trends, etc. that are aligned with best practices in regenerative farmer training and farmer apprenticeship programs.
3. *Elicit stakeholders’ insights on removing barriers and providing guidance to and resources for socially/financially disadvantaged prospective, new, and beginning farmers.
4. *Coordinate and facilitate strategic discussions in various formats—including group meetings, online sessions, one-on-one conversations, and site visits—and document key outcomes and action items.
5. Research, collect, and organize examples, articles, reports, and resources regarded as “best practices” in new regenerative farmer training and farmer apprenticeship programs.
6. *Create a secure Internet-based medium for collecting, organizing, and storing all materials and data generated for transmittal to the contract sponsor.
7. *Coordinate and lead progress meetings between the contract’s Key Personnel and the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, and prepare documentation to record meeting outcomes.
8. *Draft reports analyzing and synthesizing data collected from the Project’s stakeholder discussions.
9. *Work hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
10. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Business Administration, Agriculture, or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for helping small farmers develop sustainable business development strategies, practices, or operations; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in community-based research methods as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with business development resources and strategies for small farmers.
4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
8. Ability to travel independently in a timely and efficient manner to various locations on Oahu.
9. Able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Master's degree in business administration, agriculture, or related academic discipline.
2. Experience using small farmer business development strategies in Hawaii.
3. One year of professional work within Hawaii’s agriculture industry or farmer training programs.
4. Experience in planning, coordinating, and implementing community-focused research with attention to detail and mutually beneficial relationships.
5. Experience working with diverse and multicultural populations.
