Renewal of appointment contingent on satisfactory performance, availability of funds, and program needs. Position may be converted from 9 to 11 months or 11 to 9 months based on program needs. Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder supervision of the Science and Mathematics Division Chair, teaches a variety of introductory chemistry courses and associated laboratory courses. Other chemistry courses may be assigned, as needed by the Division Chair. Performs regular course discipline-, program-, and institutional-level assessment and uses results to improve course content and professional practice. Revises or creates new curricula and student learning outcomes when necessary, and regularly prepares and revises course syllabi. Works collaboratively with other Kaua‘i Community College faculty and staff. Serves as a role model, academic advisor, mentor, and leader to students. Identifies students' learning needs, including needs of underprepared students, and implements effective teaching strategies to address them. Independently and/or collaboratively plans, organizes, and carries out instructional and non-instructional assignments. Develops and maintains a personal, professional development program. Maintains appropriate office hours for each course taught. Day, evening, weekend, non-credit, Early College, and/or distance education classes may be assigned as part of regular workload. May be assigned operational or off-site instructional duties as part of regular workload. Changes to modality and approaches for teaching assignments may be needed to address emerging needs. Participates in discipline-, division-, campus-, and system-wide committees, as well as relevant partnership initiatives between Kaua‘i Community College/University of Hawai'i (UH) and the Hawai'i Department of Education. Demonstrates commitment to Kaua‘i Community College's mission, principles, and philosophy. Maintains a well-organized and safe laboratory environment by supplying and managing lab materials and stockroom inventory in compliance with UH System and government regulations. Ensure annual safety and hazard certifications are up-to-date.Works with Kaua'i County, State Department of Education, and other entities to improve science education.The College strongly emphasizes the "open door" concept and serves a diverse student and community population.Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum QualificationsMaster’s in Chemistry or Biochemistry OR; b) Master's in Chemical Engineering, Geochemistry, Chemical Oceanography, Organic Chemistry, Forensics Chemistry, Chemical Physics, or Environmental Chemistry with 18 credits of advanced coursework in Chemistry or Biochemistry. ("Advanced" coursework" is defined as 300-400 level courses offered in a bachelor's program.)All minimum qualifications must be from a regionally accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available, others will be considered on an Acting Instructor basis.Desirable QualificationsExperience in teaching introductory chemistry, and/or their corresponding laboratories in a Community College setting.Experience developing, preparing, disassembling, cleaning, and storing lab experiments.Ability to function autonomously and as a member of a team. Possess a supportive attitude toward student learning and be able to create a nurturing classroom environment for students of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Demonstrated understanding of issues related to Native Hawaiians or other indigenous populations and the local community, including Hawai'i's unique economic, political, business, and cultural environment.Ability to employ a variety of assignments, classroom activities, and assessment methods to develop students' critical thinking skills.
