Other Conditions: Part-time, for placement on lecturer candidate pool, contingent on availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Day, evening, or Saturday offerings, on- and off-campus including but not limited to Early College.
 
Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Under general supervision, to conduct courses in Hawaiian Studies.
  2. Maintain office hours of at least one hour per week for each course taught.
  3. Prepare course outlines and reports related to teaching and student progress.
  4. Work under supervision of department chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.
  5. Student and peer evaluations and self-assessment of teaching effectiveness are required.
  6. May include instructional assignments involving distance learning.
  7. Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential.
  8. The college strongly emphasizes the "open door" concept and serves a diverse student and community population. 

Minimum Qualifications
  1. a) Master's Degree in Hawaiian Studies, or b) Master's Degree in Hawaiian language with at least 9 credits of advanced and/or graduate level coursework focused on Native Hawaiian areas, or c) Bachelor's Degree in Hawaiian Studies and three years related work experience, or d) Master's Degree with at least 15 credits of advanced and/or graduate level coursework or research topic focused on Native Hawaiian areas, or e) Master recognition in a specific area of Hawaiian knowledge as recognized by the Hawaiian community in that area and 10 years related work experience.

All degrees must be earned from an accredited institution. If qualified applicants are not available, those not meeting minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.

Desirable Qualifications 
  1. Successful community college teaching experience.
  2. Successful multi-cultural teaching experience.
  3. Demonstrated success serving as a mentor, advisor, or team leader.
  4. Have supportive attitude toward student learning and be able to create a nurturing classroom environment for students of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated understanding of issues related to Native Hawaiians or other indigenous populations and the local community, including Hawai`i's unique economic, political, business, and cultural environment.
  6. Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students' classroom learning activities.
