INTRODUCTION
The Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR) at University of Hawaii - West Oahu (UHWO) is home to the only state labor archive of labor history in Hawaii. The archive contains irreplaceable documents and artifacts dating back to the nineteenth century–collections that draw national and international scholars. CLEAR has also produced over three hundred Rice & Roses video programs broadcast on Hawaii Public Television from 1971, in addition to recent documentaries on well-known leaders in Hawaii labor history. CLEAR also served as the custodian of the programs and unique video footage after the privatization of public television, preserving its rare interviews of some of the most important Hawaii labor history. Our collections consist of the records of many of the unions and labor councils, the papers of many rank and file members, photographs, newspapers, ephemera, arbitration, manuscripts, and an extensive oral history collection.
The CLEAR Archivist contributes to the arrangement, description, and preservation of the CLEAR’s analog and digital records to ensure that information is organized and accessible. In coordination with UHWO Librarians, the CLEAR Archivist develops and implements an integrated and coordinated approach for accessioning and processing new analog and born-digital acquisitions as well as the development of content for CLEAR website and Labor Studies (LBST) courses. The CLEAR Archivist serves as the steward for CLEAR labor history collections, provides leadership in the department, the Library, and across the University on issues relating to the transfer, long-term preservation, and access to digital archival holdings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Acquire, preserve, arrange, describe, and provide access to CLEAR’s collections.
- Work with labor unions, labor related organizations and University of Hawaii (UH) statewide departments, research centers, student groups, and administrative units to transfer to CLEAR for permanent storage analog and digital institutional records of enduring value.
- Collaborate with staff in the Digital Scholarship and Technology Services Department to develop policies and maintain processes for the long-term storage and preservation of and access to digital materials.
- Work scheduled shifts at the archive desk and reading room, assisting researchers in registering using the special collections patron management system, in the appropriate use of a public scanner, and in the proper care and use of materials.
- Answer CLEAR Archives-related reference questions from scholars, community members, faculty, students, administrators, alumni, the media, and other researchers at the reception desk, and by chat, email, or phone.
- Determine patrons' research needs; identifies and locates appropriate information sources.
- Determine which materials can be made available for research under University policy and the law.
- Participate in the development and creation of digital collections for enhanced online access to materials.
- Collaborate with Uluulu: The Henry Kuualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive of Hawaii and Technology Services staff to design and implement workflows for in-house digitization.
- Prepare materials physically and intellectually for outsourced digitization.
- Perform quality control on digitized collections.
- Create, edit, and enhance curated archival collections in DSpace, ArchivesSpace, CLEAR websites.
- Promote the use of special collections through active outreach to public and private educational institutions throughout the state, faculty and students, regular collaboration with research services librarians, labor unions and labor-related education programs, and CLEAR staff in classroom instruction.
- Collaborate with CLEAR colleagues in providing instructional support.
- Contribute content to the CLEAR’s website, blog and social media programs.
- Participate in exhibition work, including the development of exhibition concepts, scholarly research, writing and editing of textual descriptions, installation and de-installation of rotating exhibitions and related special events that promote collections and expand their use for research and scholarship.
- Manage content production (as well as write content) for DSpace.
- Serve on department, Library, and/or university-wide committees, task forces, or working groups.
- Contribute to the profession through presentation and/or active involvement in professional organizations at the local, regional, national, and/or international level.
- Monitor developments, trends, and issues in the area of responsibility.

- ALA-accredited MLS, or Master’s degree in Information Science, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated success in leading and managing organizational change.
