The Dean’s Office seeks applicants for a non-tenure track Researcher to contribute to the understanding of fundamental processes occurring in the so-called Low Wind Effect (LWE) phenomenon that can be relevant to ground-based observatories and in particular direct observation of exoplanets. While the project is largely computational/modeling in nature, we anticipate the opportunity to directly test preliminary results within an observatory setting, and to participate in an international collaboration with researchers at the von Karman Institute in Belgium. The position will report directly to Dr. Aurélia Charrier (charrier@hawaii.edu) and is physically based in Hilo, Hawaii.

  3. Design experimental studies including relevant sensors to directly measure instrument-specific aberrations.
  4. Provide mentorship for graduate research assistants and undergraduate student employees.
  5. Participate in preparing project reports, research proposals, technical reports, and journal articles.

  1. Master’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Physics or related disciplines from a college or university of recognized standing.
  2. Strong background in thermal and aerodynamic modeling.
  3. Proficiency in computation fluid dynamics (CFD) and related software (e.g. ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or equivalent).

Desirable Qualifications
  1. Doctoral degree (or ABD) in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Physics or related disciplines from a college or university of recognized standing.
  2. Knowledge of image processing tools.
  3. Experience in thermal measurements.
