Assistant Director for Academic Programs and Services

The Assistant Director for Academic Programs and Services will provide policy and data analysis, report preparation, and coordination of committees and University-wide groups in support of Interim Senior Director. Act as liaison to the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) in the area of program approval, revision, and/or elimination for the three campuses of the University. Provide support to the three universities in the preparing and editing of proposals and documents for IBHE processing. Serve as a liaison between the University of Illinois and educational, civic, non-profit, professional and government organizations in the course of providing coordination and expertise to other University of Illinois projects, as assigned. Manage and provide planning expertise for University Academic Programs and Services (UAPS) events. Manage portfolio of complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with counterparts at each university's office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Provost), University administration personnel, and IBHE staff in the IBHE submission and liaison role.
- Manage the Residency-for-tuition appeals process and serve on the Residency-for-tuition appeal review committee.
- Provide support to the Interim Senior Director and the three universities' Provost offices in facilitating approval processes, as they move through levels of governance and the Board of Trustees (BOT), for new academic programs and units, revisions to existing programs and units, and eliminations. Includes working with the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) and Higher Learning Commission (HLC) as appropriate.
- In coordination with Interim Senior Director, promote collaboration and cooperation among the three universities with respect to inter-campus initiatives and the drafting of policies and procedures for the implementation of such projects.
- Serve on the monthly meeting of the Academic Affairs and Academic Programs committee, which includes the Interim Senior Director and members from the Provosts' offices of the three universities. The committee facilitates communication between the campuses and the UAPS regarding issues that could impact academic affairs (e.g., program proposal moving through governance, proposed legislation, outside factors affecting organizational structures, etc.).
- Review academic items submitted by campuses for each BOT meeting. Collaborate with colleagues to maintain the web-based database documenting the approval status of items in the BOT and IBHE approval and report processes.
- Support the coordination of the University-wide annual IBHE as well as other mandated reports.
- Prepare policy and data reviews for the Interim Senior Director for use in determining and implementing policy for University of Illinois initiatives. Serve as a policy analyst and being a repository of knowledge about the U of I System universities, the system of higher education in Illinois (IBHE and legislature), so that policies can be developed and implemented, and accountability with legal and administrative mandates is maintained.
- Provide expertise to Office of Government Relations and UAPS by preparing policy, legislative, and data reviews. Collaborate with UAPS staff in generating University of Illinois system-wide responses to statewide initiatives and mandates.
- Coordinate, manage, and assist UAPS staff with UI System-wide recruiting events designed to impact the pipeline of underrepresented students and/or stem out-migration to surrounding states.
- Coordinate and manage the Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) and Shin Humanitarian Award. .
- Provide representation on behalf of the system on statewide and regional consortia. Serve as a liaison and nurture relationships between the University of Illinois and educational, civic, non-profit, professional and government organizations in role of coordinating University of Illinois projects, including Illinois P-20 Council, Thrive Chicago, and initiatives with Chicago Public Schools.
- Perform other duties appropriate for the position of Assistant Director of Academic Programs and Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Master's Degree
Preferred:
- Terminal degree or earned doctorate in higher education or related field
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Demonstrated understanding of academic programs, experience with higher education boards and or their staff, and ability to coordinate diverse interests in achieving university-wide goals.
- Extensive applicable experience in academic program development and approval processes.
- Demonstrated leadership skills to achieve organizational short- and long-term objectives and goals.
- Strong analytical skills, with expertise in data and policy analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in program development, management, and implementation.
- Well-developed verbal and written communications skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external groups.
- Excellent administrative skills that reflect good judgment and discretion.
- Proficiency with Microsoft computer programs/applications and databases.
Preferred:
- Knowledge about activities conducted on all three campuses of the University of Illinois.
- Knowledge of and experience working in higher education in Illinois.
- Cvent experience.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is 2/24/2025. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $80,000.00 - 92,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
