Salary : The budgeted salary range for the position is $60,000 to $75,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints.

Position Summary

Senior Academic Advisors in the College of Education are responsible for promoting the academic success, professional, and overall development of undergraduate and graduate students from their orientation through graduation. Senior Academic Advisors provides guidance on degree requirements and programs; academic and professional planning; University, College, and Campus policies and procedures; course selection and registration; and available resources and opportunities. They also evaluate students' degree progress and eligibility, provide guidance and direction regarding degree requirements and programs, and facilitate academic and professional planning.

The Senior Academic Advisor works under the direction of the Associate Dean for Student Success and in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Admissions and Registration. Working in partnership with stakeholders throughout the university community, senior academic advisors are student advocates integral to the student's learning.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides holistic undergraduate and graduate student advising for College of Education students and promotes the academic, professional, and overall development of students from their orientation up through graduation.
  • Provides guidance on degree requirements and programs; academic and professional advising and planning; course selection and registration; and University and College policies and procedures. Interprets and enforces administrative and academic policies.
  • Contributes to the Office for Student Success team and assists with unit goals, policies, and leads and implements initiatives and programming in consultation with Associate Dean for Student Success and in alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Documents each academically pertinent interaction with individual students and updates the systems / databases (i.e., Starfish) as needed to ensure that student records properly reflect degree progress and academic status.
  • Reviews and contributes to decisions for the academic notice, probation or dismissal of individual students.
  • Researches and manages complex student cases including but not limited to protected categories, student status, petition processes (i.e. Satisfactory Academic Progress), escalations, transfer issues, continuing student status, academic standing, and other extenuating circumstances. Facilitates access for students to resources through the University community.
  • Contacts (via email / phone / virtual outreach / in person) to new and continuing students to proactively enroll or disseminate information.
  • Exercises professional discretion and judgment to troubleshoot issues that may arise.
  • Creates successful partnerships with other units on campus to facilitate resources and services toward student success.
  • Supports and leads current student success and retention initiatives, such as student orientation, academic tutoring, peer coaching, and career development programs; student events; professional development, time management, and academic success workshops and seminar.
  • Supports students in their transition to college and leads related workshops.
  • May assist in the development and training of academic advisors and professional development initiatives.
  • May oversee undergraduate student employees.
  • May represent OSS in key relevant, campus level committees.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Master's degree in education, student personnel, counseling, human resources, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of demonstrated experience providing academic advising in a college or university setting.
  • Excellent communication, organization, analytical, presentation, and computer skills with proficiency in MicroSoft Office Suite.
  • Record of student-centered support while maintaining the academic integrity of the institution.
  • Knowledge of best practices and current research associated with advising, student development theory, and effective retention strategies in higher education.
  • History of exceeding workplace expectations (punctuality, preparedness, high-quality work, timely follow-through without reminders, raising issues that need attention while providing potential solutions, willingness to brainstorm new ideas / programs and enact change).
  • History of consistently demonstrating role model behavior to colleagues while forming positive professional relationships in the workplace, including collaborating with faculty, staff, administrators and other campus units.
  • Strong command of campus information technology systems (such as slate.org), campus and college procedures, and campus and student support services.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail. Ability to multi-task and to handle cases that require the coordination of multiple campus units to reach a resolution.
  • Ability to initiate and lead events, programs and professional development to enhance the student experience.
  • Record of attending professional development to advance their knowledge and practice associated with advising.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with building successful partnerships with other units on campus to facilitate resources and services toward student success.
  • Familiarity with Slate.org
  • History of developing and executing new advising ideas / programs.
  • Multilingual proficiencies (esp. Spanish)
