What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Nurse 50% - Anesthesia position at University of Iowa Health Care Health System?
The Staff Nurse will split their time between the Digestive Health Clinic (DHC) and Chronic Pain. In the DHC this position will facilitate preoperative evaluation and assessment of patients served by the department of anesthesia with a heavy emphasis on telephone patient care management.
In Chronic pain this position will assess patients' nursing care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory and research into clinical practice.What you will do:
Preanesthetic
- Perform phone call preoperative evaluations for patients scheduled to receive anesthesia.
- Retrieve information from the UIHC patient record and enter in into the anesthesia record for an average of 20 patients per day.
- Collaborate with specialty services, consultants, and other departments to facilitate appropriate preoperative workup.
- Educate patients through regarding perioperative process, NPO expectations, and medication instructions.
Chronic Pain
- Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations.
- Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings.
- Develops patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
- Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Documents/reports interventions and patient/family response.
- Develops, coordinates, and implements transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care.
- Provides patient and physician support during procedures to include patient positioning.

What you will need:
Required Qualifications:
- An Associate's degree in Nursing, Diploma in Nursing, Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, or Master's degree in Nursing (MNHP or MSN).
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking/problem solving.
Desired Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a presurgical evaluation setting is highly desirable.
- Prior experience in perioperative/procedural setting is highly desirable.
- 3-5 years experience in an ambulatory care setting or inpatient setting with experience that includes pain management (including experience with pain management during painful procedures).
- Current experience with telephone patient care management (phone triaging).
- Certification in Pain Management Nursing or a related nursing field.
