Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates and performs whole-animal behavioral testing and analysis including motor function assessment, thermal and mechanical withdrawal threshold determination, assessment of memory formation and retention, and contextual conditioning paradigms.
  • Trains and manages the daily activities of all students and staff utilizing the Rodent Behavior Facility. Trains and oversees all users on core equipment use, including maintaining training logs.
  • Collects, manages and analyzes sample data, performs statistical analyses and creates graphical representations of data sets where appropriate. Develops result reports for investigators in both written and graphical format.
  • Collaborates with investigators to develop specialized research procedures and experiments, leveraging the Rodent Behavior Facility's specialized equipment and services.
  • Provides guidance and serves as a consultant for investigators related to experimental design, instrument and technology operation, and analysis of techniques. Aligns methods with research goals. Identifies and solves analytical challenges to ensure experimental success.
  • Provides text for grants and manuscripts that outline scientific protocols with accurate citations of primary literature. Edits Materials and Methods sections for publications. Ensures compliance with the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies.
  • Provides standard language for animal care and use protocols utilizing Behavior Core techniques. Develops new techniques and protocols.
  • Collaborates with the Scientific Director on the Rodent Behavior Facility's annual SOM Budget and Evaluation self-study.
  • Effectively communicates both verbally and through written platforms, and conveys projected progress or core-related issues in a timely manner to the Scientific Director and, when relevant, Investigator clientele. Communicates and coordinates scheduling and access with Lab Animal Resources.
  • Acts as a liaison to ensure compliance with the Environmental Health and Safety Office, Office of Regulatory Affairs for Biological Sciences, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Lab Animal Resources, Research Administration or other regulatory units both internally and externally.
  • Prioritizes access to and projects and work within the Rodent Behavior Facility.
  • Maintains Rodent Behavior Facility systems and applications related to daily operations including scheduling, ordering, and billing activities. Determines access to the facility.
  • Maintains experimental calendar for rodent testing conducted in the Core. Contributes to the overall scheduling of access to the Core, and maintains the function, safety and cleanliness of core apparatus.
  • Works in a professional, client-focused manner, to identify and support the needs of the research programs served by the Rodent Behavior Facility.
  • Oversees lab safety including delivering training, developing safety protocols, and maintaining safety and compliance documentation. Facilitates twice a year compliance inspections. This will include keeping logs of cleaning events and adherence to compliance protocols with the Safety Office, interacting with regulators or their proxies, and maintaining and adhering to relevant SOPs. Maintains documentation of all approved protocols for the Rodent Behavior Facility.

Required Qualifications :

Education :

  • Bachelor's degree in life science or relevant field of study OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience on a year for year basis.
  • Work Experience :

  • Three years of cumulative laboratory / animal handling experience and demonstrate a thorough understanding and ability to manifest scientific rigor and reproducibility.
  • Completion of the KUMC Animal Research Coordinator program is required.
  • Previous experience with rodent surgical and non-surgical procedures including ovariectomy, venipuncture, pellet implantation, i.p. or s.c. compound administration.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

    Education :

  • Masters' degree in a life science discipline
  • Work Experience :

  • Previous experience with rodent behavior assays, particularly including sensorimotor and cognitive testing paradigms is preferred.
  • Understanding of underlying physiological and neural mechanisms of rodent cognition and motor function is preferred.
  • Previous scientific project management.
  • Skills :

  • Demonstrated proficiency with various automated data gathering and analysis software packages including Noldus Ethovision, SigmaPlot, Prism, DigiGait, Excel, and Basi FPA would be preferred.
  • Work independently to collect and analyze scientific data in a manner that comports with valid and stable testing parameters
  • Attention to detail and ability to perform testing with tightly controlled consistency over time.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills

    Compensation Statement :

    The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
