  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Represents physician authors during online manuscript submission to medical journals.
  • Advises authors during the compilation of responses to peer review.
  • Serves as liaison between physician authors and publishing houses regarding book contracts and production.
  • Secures permission for use of previously published material from publishing companies and other copyright holders.
  • Communicates with medical artists and photographers.
  • Advises authors regarding target journal selections, including second and third choices when manuscripts are rejected.
  • Composes text for department-based websites.
  • Prepares letters, documents, nominations, proposals for Department Chair as needed.
  • Conducts literature searches as requested.
  • Maintains departmental list of publications and extracts reports from that list as requested for reports and presentations.
  • Distributes articles of interest to physician staff members based on area of expertise.
  • Develops and conducts technical writing and medical publishing workshops/seminars.
  • Creates PowerPoint presentations and brochures for training and promotional purposes.
  • Assesses business writing and work processing needs of administrative staff and provides appropriate training.
  • Represents the department as a speaker in programs sponsored by the Office for Research and Graduate Studies and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development.
  • Writes announcements of faculty hires, promotions, publications, grants, lectures and conferences and submits them to campus publications.
  • Revises manuscripts in scope, format, or content according to reviewers’ comments and authors’ requests; writes clearly and informatively; Edits work for spelling, grammar and syntax; varies writing style to meet needs; presents numerical data effectively.
  • Serves as a liaison with managers of other departments and FPI administration staff.
  • Exhibits consistent, professional behavior.
  • Ensures authors’ compliance with journal requirements for copyright transfer and financial disclosure.
  • Secures permission for use of previously published material from publishing companies and other copyright holders.
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations to keep current on issues related to medical publishing.
  • Completes mandatory employee health, workers compensation, HR processes and other training and requirements in required time frame to ensure compliance with all FPI rules and regulations.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related discipline from an

accredited college or university; Master’s degree preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in writing/editing medical or other technical

material.

  • Certification by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS) is highly desirable.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Knowledge of grammar, composition, and standards of proper use of English language.

Knowledge of the phases of journal, book, and newspaper publications.

Knowledge of editing procedures.

Familiarity with medical terminology and statistical analysis for review of medical

manuscripts and other technical documents.

Knowledge of the operation of and ability to use a personal computer system, word

processing software, and automated database management.

Ability to use a scientific calculator for computations, to verify statistical analysis in

manuscripts, to extract data from narrative to present as graphs, and to determine

numerical trends in graphs to present as narrative.

Highly effective oral and writing communication skills are necessary in order to interact with medical, nursing, and allied health personnel.

Awareness of ethical issues in medical publishing (e.g., authorship requirements, duplicate

publication, and copyright.

Knowledge of purchasing, budgeting and inventory control.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
