What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Elec Micro Hist Tech - Pathology position at University of Maryland Faculty Physicians?
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director in charge, prepares tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, embeds sections and stains slides from clinical and research according to standardized department lab procedures for routine histology and electron microscopy examination and analysis. Performs other related duties as assigned. Monitors and maintains related equipment and supplies; and other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE
- Completion of a CAHEA-accredited histotechnology program; with an Associate's degree plus one year of full time experience in histopathology within the last three years under the supervision of a pathologist or 3 years of recent histology laboratory experience
- ASCP certification as a histologic technician or eligible for certification
- CEMT (Certified Electron Microscopy Technologist) certification (preferred) or one year of full time experience in a CAP accredited Electron Microscopy Laboratory
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Performs specimen accessioning and logging routines :
a. Checks each specimen for criteria for acceptability, assuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate paperwork.
b. Records the receipt of specimens in the log and assigns identification number according to department protocol.
c. Refers any problem specimen to the area of collection and informs the supervisor for follow-up action where necessary.
2. Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides :
a. Sets the tissue processor instrument for tissue processing according to departmental procedure.
b. Embeds the processed tissue using the embedding center instrument.
c. Cuts embedded tissues for slide sections using the microtome instrument.
d. Performs routine and special stains according to departmental procedures.
e. Performs all of the above duties according to schedule to maintain appropriate workflow and timely completion.
f. Ensures the Histology laboratory is in compliance with GLP guidelines.
3. Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for Electron Microscopy :
a. Prepares specimens for observation under an EM scope using specialized embedding and staining techniques.
b. Places specimens into an EM scope for examination.
c. Taking and recording digital images of the specimen using the AMT camera.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland's Faculty Physician's Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education / training and other qualifications.
