The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan (UM) is looking for a collaborative, creative, and service-oriented Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting to the Executive Director of Administration and Chief Financial Officer, you will provide strategic technology leadership across the college and for LSA Technology Services. You will also represent LSA as an active contributor to UM-wide technology governance.

The LSA CIO is a visionary leader who integrates their professional expertise to enhance LSA's technology landscape. The CIO aligns LSA's tech strategies with broader UM goals, ensuring that the faculty, staff, and students' experiences and needs are met so that we remain a leader in knowledge discovery and sharing. By promoting new technologies and encouraging innovation, the CIO ensures LSA's technology services are secure, reliable, and responsive to the user needs across LSA.

Leading staff is another critical aspect of your responsibilities. As LSA CIO, you will lead our diverse team of 180 regular staff who deliver technology services across academic, research, and administrative needs in over 60 diverse academic and administrative departments. You will offer coaching to our team, foster an inclusive environment, focus on continuous improvement, and promote quality service for the college community.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Develop enterprise information technologies and services necessary to exceed user expectations using technical expertise, administrative experience, and positive leadership.
  • Participate in college and university strategic planning, bringing current knowledge and a vision for technology relevant to LSA's position as a leader in knowledge discovery and sharing. Develop a strategic LSA technology plan that aligns with UM priorities.
  • Lead complex change projects to successful completion. Identify technology changes and trends; involve partners in forecasting effects so that Technology Services remains at the forefront of serving the LSA community's needs.
  • Lead an organization that advances LSA's Mission, Vision, and Values, dedicated to continuous improvement, customer service, and supporting an environment of smart risk-taking.
  • Foster collaboration between academic and administrative leaders across UM to provide an integrated approach to technology services that supports the fulfillment of LSA's mission.
  • Use advisory committees and other groups to accelerate collaboration in addressing technology needs across LSA, balancing the supply and demand for our potential services.
  • Oversee the life cycle of services offered, using other viable service providers when viable.
  • Advocate for IT resources, people, and tools in partnership with college leadership.
  • Collaborate with the UM Vice President for Information Technology and other technology leaders to foster community and enhance coordination among UM technology providers, ensuring seamless service planning and delivery.
  • Direct an accomplished and diverse team of technology professionals by recruiting and developing managers for success.
  • Maintain a technology workforce with an appropriate mix of business knowledge and technical skills that balance enhancing the necessary skills to achieve digital goals and ensuring our core IT responsibilities are reliable and efficient.

Minimum Requirements :

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent and at least 10 years of leadership experience in technology services with a history of success in a complex organization balancing technical knowledge and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated strategic planning experience.
  • Experience managing budgets of at least $10M and people in a decentralized work environment.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse partners with sometimes competing interests.
  • Success in collaborating with diverse individuals and groups, fostering transparency, and trust, and resolving challenges in a respectful and open environment.
  • Experience leading complex organizational changes.
  • Experience leading teams responsible for several areas : technology infrastructure, software applications and development, end-user computing, data management and analytics, cybersecurity, audio-visual technologies, and service desk, among other technology services and capabilities.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Higher education experience.
  • Relevant professional certifications.
  • Understanding of emergent technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
  • The position requires on-campus / in-person work from the Ann Arbor campus with some time working remotely, based on operational needs.
