Job Summary

Responsible for advising and counseling students on the School of Social Work's Undergraduate Educational Programs, including, but not limited to the Community Action and Social Change program minor and the Sociology-Social Work Submajor plan. This advising position will be responsible for providing information to prospective and declared undergraduate students. Coordinating student appointments, managing the interface between the Undergraduate Education Programs office, LSA, SSW registrar, and other schools/colleges is essential. This position will act as liaison to academic departments and student services functions. This position reports to the Undergraduate Educational Program Director.

Responsibilities*

Student Engagement (70%)

  • Provides academic advising services to current students, potential majors, minors, and others; utilizes confidential information and conducts confidential conversations to provide these services.
  • Meets one-on-one in office as well as in group settings with students to provide advice and counsel on curriculum-specific matters, major exploration issues, affiliation, university policy and procedure, and non-academic factors affecting academic performance.
  • Meets with students to discuss long-range academic plans and career goals.
  • Create a welcoming environment where students can safely develop ownership of their educational progress.
  • Advises students on course selection and distribution requirements; provides assistance to students to ensure their academic, personal and professional success; meets with students to discuss post-university opportunities, develops strategies tailored to reach individual career goals and refers to university career resources.
  • Assess individual student needs and refer them to appropriate university resources, including financial aid, tutorial support, writing center, counseling and psychological services, disability and accessibility support services, and career services.
  • Document all advising appointments/interactions in the appropriate University advising systems.
  • Manage all reporting for student records.


Program Development, Outreach & Additional Duties (Approx. 30%)

  • Plan, develop, and implement program outreach efforts, including presentations, meetings, mass information sessions, and other forms of outreach.
  • Develop new student orientation sessions.
  • Collaborate with the School of Social Work and University Partners to support students and develop programs and resources, as needed.
  • Use technology and data management to support the implementation and assessment of retention and student outreach programs.
  • Contribute to the development of short- and long-term plans for Undergraduate Programming, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate on specialized projects as determined in collaboration with your supervisor.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Fulfill other assigned tasks consistent with the scope of the position.


Required Qualifications*

  • Candidates must have a Master's Degree.
  • Ideal candidates will have an MSW degree, plus at least two years post-master's degree experience or an equivalent degree.
  • Preferred candidates will have two or more years experience working as an academic advisor, or in a similar student facing role, preferably within higher education.
  • Basic or above proficiency with Microsoft Suite software, Adobe Acrobat, Google applications, web editing, and Zoom.
  • Comfortable presenting complex information in face-to-face and online modalities.


Desired Qualifications*

  • Strong management, conflict resolution and organization skills as well as a strong commitment to a student-centered philosophy.
  • Skills (Familiarity) working with student information databases, including FileMaker, Advising file systems, and University of Michigan student data systems.


Modes of Work
