Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and University Registrar and working with the senior leadership team, the Assistant Director for Compliance and Special Projects leads and supports projects for the Office of the Registrar (RO). You will be the lead for documenting and supporting numerous internal and external compliance matters, such as preparing policy briefs and staying informed on compliance requirements concerning student and course records. You will work with the RO leadership team to improve business processes spanning academic records management, compliance, curriculum management, tuition and fees, internal and external reporting, student services, etc.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize students' experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff in support of the university's mission.
OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members and up to 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units - the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. OEM strives to provide excellence in access and support to inspiring learners who will challenge the present and enrich the future.
Responsibilities*
The Office of Enrollment Management requires a hybrid work arrangement of a minimum of three days on-site and two remote days. Thursday is an on-site work day for all divisional staff, and this leadership role may require daily work onsite. Learn more about the modes of work.

Responsibilities*
- Foster collaboration and communication between the Office of the Registrar and the schools and colleges, administrative units and departments, and outside agencies to identify needs related to academic records, course records, academic calendar set-up, and other policy and compliance practices.
- Identify potential compliance vulnerability and risk; develop and implement corrective action plans to manage and mitigate risk and improve compliance practices.
- Serves as a member of the RO senior leadership team; may provide strategic and work direction to teams and supervise individuals or teams as needed.
- Partner with RO and Divisional leadership to coordinate special projects for the Office of the Registrar, including Big Ten Academic Alliance CourseShare registration, Reverse Transfer agreements, and other emerging priority projects.
- Collaborate with the Associate Registrar for Information Services and U-M Athletics to ensure regulatory compliance with the NCAA and Department of Education.
- Develop detailed work plans, schedules, status reports, and projections.
- Monitor the status of projects to ensure completion of milestones from initiation to delivery and keep leadership informed of any deviations.
- Assist staff in the RO and across Enrollment Management to comply with FERPA regulations, which may include in-person and online training.
- Identify and monitor regulatory changes and document them. Communicate impact update policy manuals and workflow procedures to maintain compliance with federal and state requirements.
- Identify and analyze systematic problems, propose solutions, and provide training to address issues.
- Coordinate and respond to subpoenas and requests for other student records.
- Assist with coordinating internal audits, including responses and action plans.
- Perform other tasks as assigned, including supporting the university in re-accreditation processes related to Registrar and School/College policies.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Four years of professional experience in higher education, including experience coordinating projects and working with students, staff, and faculty.
- Demonstrated experience identifying and analyzing compliance issues, as well as the development/interpretation of policies or regulations such as FERPA.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Ability to multitask and perform different tasks with accuracy under deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member in a collaborative environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including preparing presentations and sharing information with diverse and broad audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Master's degree
- Previous supervisory experience
- Experience with modern student information systems such as Oracle Student Administration system
- An understanding of higher education policies and procedures, specifically those that affect enrollment management and registrar functions
