Job Summary
This position may be filled at the level of Associate Pre-Award Officer (Job Code 103978 Associate Sponsored Project Officer) with a salary range of $58,781 - $70,821 or Pre-Award Officer (Job Code 103979 Sponsored Project Officer) with a salary range of $62,889 - $78,611 depending upon the qualifications and relevant experience of the selected candidate.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) safeguards and advances U-M's research enterprise by providing its partners with efficient pre-award and non-financial post-award services for the compliant administration of externally sponsored grants, contracts, and ancillary agreements. Our office is growing and looking for experienced individuals to provide pre-award services and oversight for the institution. The incumbent in this position reviews and ensures accurate and timely submission of University wide sponsored research grant proposals for standard and routine activity and for more complex submissions, such as program project grants; reviews, negotiates, post submission changes and requests in compliance with sponsor and institutional policies and guidelines. This position has the responsibility and authority to review and agree to sponsor terms and conditions on behalf of the University as a project representative in the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects.
Under management of a Manager, Sponsored Projects, this position is responsible for the following:
Principal Job Duties - Associate Pre-Award Officer
Oversees and ensures accurate and timely submission and provides oversight for University sponsored project proposals. Determines that all University & sponsor requirements are met prior to University's endorsement & submission of proposals.
Oversees and ensures accurate and timely submission and provides oversight for post-submission information requests and handles pre-award negotiations.
Provides assistance & guidance to University faculty & staff, usually one-on-one or in small group settings. Assumes direct contact with faculty and project teams as required

Oversees and ensures accurate and timely submission and provides oversight for University sponsored project proposals, including but not limited to multi-school, multi-institutional proposals such as program project grants and other complex submissions. Determines that all University & sponsor requirements are met prior to University's endorsement & submission of proposals.
Oversees and ensures accurate and timely submission and provides oversight for post-submission information requests and handles pre-award negotiations.
Provide guidance to project teams related to proposal submissions and post submission inquiries. Represents Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) in meetings in conjunction with more senior ORSP staff. Assumes full level of contact with project teams. Handles complex issues with sponsors.
Focuses on more complex compliance issues and serves as a resource to more junior staff in this regard.
Required Qualifications*
Required Qualifications - Associate Pre-Award Officer:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident Status: ORSP deals with export controlled information, the handling of which is regulated by the U.S. Federal Government and access to which is restricted to U.S. Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents.

Experience in pre-award related to various extramural sponsors, such as Federal agencies, state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and industry.
Working knowledge of sponsor software systems (e.g. eRA Commons, Research.gov, Proposal Central, etc.).
Familiarity with U-M policies and procedures related to research administration (including, but not limited to, accounting, purchasing, personnel, and regulatory compliance).
Experience providing excellent customer service.
Certification in Research Administration (CRA or CPRA)
Desired Qualifications - Pre-Award Officer
MBA, JD, or similar advanced degree.
Experience in pre-award and/or non-financial post-award related to various extramural sponsors, such as Federal agencies, state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and industry.
Working knowledge of sponsor software systems (e.g. eRA Commons, Research.gov, Proposal Central, etc.).
Familiarity with U-M policies and procedures related to research administration (including, but not limited to, accounting, purchasing, personnel, and regulatory compliance).
Experience providing excellent customer service.
