Job Summary

The Community Engagement Manager plays a pivotal role within the agency by supporting sworn officers and enhancing problem-oriented public safety operations. This civilian position is dedicated to connecting arrested individuals or those experiencing crises with essential resources, aiming to reduce repeat offenses and promote positive community outcomes. This role will actively collaborate with law enforcement, community organizations, and various stakeholders to build stronger community relationships and provide critical support to individuals in need.

This position may require some evenings and weekends to meet the needs of DPS operations.

This position is a 2 year term limited grant funded position with the option of renewal.

Responsibilities*

Crisis Intervention

  • Assist in crisis situations by providing immediate support and intervention, working to de-escalate situations, and facilitating access to necessary services.


Case Management

  • Assess the needs of arrested individuals and those in crisis and connect them with appropriate community resources, including mental health services, substance abuse treatment, housing assistance, and social services.
  • Maintain detailed records of interactions and service referrals, track progress, and follow up to ensure individuals receive continued support and guidance.
  • Work closely with community agencies such as law enforcement personnel, county prosecutor's office, courts, and community organizations to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to service delivery.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on program activities, outcomes, and areas for improvement to departmental leadership and community partners.
  • Collect and analyze data.


Community Engagement

  • Develop and nurture relationships with community organizations, service providers, and stakeholders to enhance the network of resources available to individuals in need.
  • Support the development and planning of community activities and events.


Education And Training

  • Support law enforcement personnel with training and informational sessions on available community resources and best practices for working with individuals in crisis.
  • Support educational efforts that reduce youth crime and enhance the quality of life in the Flint community.


Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or a related field.
  • 2 or more years of experience in a role related to the responsibilities, including crisis intervention and case management.
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of community resources, social service systems, and crisis intervention techniques in order to provide training.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement, community organizations, and diverse populations.
  • Proven ability to have compassion, empathy, and a commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with case management software.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.


Modes of Work

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes here.

Additional Information

All members of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) are Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Background Screening

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checks will be performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The process may include but is not limited to, an oral interview, leadership and/or stakeholder interviews, an administrative overview, background reviews, and any applicable medical components, such as drug and psychological screening.

Pay Range Information

The pay range for this position is $66,900.00 to $83,600.00.
