Job Summary

This is a student training program that will be located in our Kellogg Eye Center Adult Strabismus & Pediatrics clinic (Ann Arbor). The student will be paid for 8 hours per week and will be expected to be learning 30-32 hours per week. The orthoptic student program consists of both didactics and clinical training. The academic portion of the program consists of a sequence of courses vital to the understanding of the visual system and take place online and in-person with certified orthoptists. The clinical training involves working with patients of all ages under the supervision of a certified orthoptist or an ophthalmologist. Students interact with medical students, ophthalmology residents, fellows and medical professionals in a clinic setting. The orthoptic program participants will also complete a pediatric ophthalmic technician training program asynchronously, allowing for the opportunity to gain additional experience and knowledge in the clinical setting.

Responsibilities*

  • Work with certified orthoptists during their independent clinics (including patient workup and sensorimotor exams, applying Fresnel prisms, etc.)
  • Work with attending physicians during their clinics (including patient workup, sensorimotor exams, applying Fresnel prisms, etc.)
  • Attend weekly online courses (via Zoom) presented by the American Association of Certified Orthoptists (AACO)
  • Study lecture/clinical material independently at home after clinic/on weekends
  • Attend relevant journal clubs/grand rounds presentations
  • Complete Ophthalmic Technician training program and perform ophthalmic testing with proficiency within the Adult Strabismus and Pediatric sub-specialty

Required Qualifications*

  • Four-year undergraduate bachelor's degree

Desired Qualifications*

  • Patient-care experience
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR)
  • Familiarity with ophthalmology terminology

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
