Description

The University of North Alabama seeks an innovative, collaborative, and strategic leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a dynamic college that combines diverse disciplines, innovative programs, and a strong commitment to student and faculty success.

The dean is the principal administrator and primary advocate for the college and reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The dean will provide vision and leadership for the college, which includes three schools and multiple departments : The College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering comprises the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, which includes the departments of communication; English; foreign languages; history; military science; politics, justice, law, and philosophy; psychology and sociology; and social work. The School of Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics includes the departments of biology; chemistry and physics; engineering and industrial professions; geoscience; and mathematics. The School of the Arts includes the departments of cinematic arts and theatre; entertainment industry; music; and visual arts and design. In addition to these schools, the College also houses an interdisciplinary and professional studies program. Baccalaureate degrees are offered in all these disciplines, and graduate programs are offered in applied manufacturing engineering, criminal justice, English, family and community services, history, mathematics, professional studies, social work, and writing.

Essential Job Duties

The dean articulates the vision of the college through successful leadership in college, university, and professional activities; advocates and fosters excellence in teaching, scholarship, and program development; and serves as the chief administrative and academic officer of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering by providing strategic direction, managing resources effectively, and strengthening partnerships both within and beyond the university. The dean also plays a critical role in student recruitment, retention, and success initiatives and champions a culture of inclusion and shared governance while supporting faculty development.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate in a discipline taught within the college is required; significant teaching experience and scholarly achievements commensurate with those required for appointment at the rank of full professor is required; and a record of successful administrative experience and leadership in a university setting at the level of department head or above is required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; a record of involvement with professional organizations consistent with the mission of the college; strong financial skills to include budget planning and financial management; knowledge of national accreditation standards for the disciplines within the college; success in fundraising and alumni engagement; ability to work collaboratively with other colleges and offices throughout the university; experience in strategic planning; a demonstrated commitment to the recruitment, professional development, and retention of a talented and diverse workforce; an understanding of educational technology trends in traditional and online instruction; a commitment to applied research, including undergraduate research; and commitment to workforce development initiatives.

UNA provides all eligible employees with basic life insurance at no cost to the employee. The basic life coverage level is 1.5 times the covered employee's annual base salary with a maximum benefit of $400,000. The provider for this coverage is

As a member of the , eligible employees have life benefits available through the TRS. Also, for eligible active employees, a death benefit of the payment of accrued sick leave or 60 workdays, whichever is smaller, is paid to the employee's beneficiary by the University.

This coverage provides benefits after a 90-day period of disability. The monthly benefit is 60% of the covered employee's monthly base salary not to exceed $10,000 per month. The cost for this benefit is paid in full by the University for eligible employees and the provider for this coverage is

Retirement Plans

The is a defined benefit plan in which participation is mandatory for eligible employees. Eligible employees are categorized by the TRS as Tier I or Tier II members.

Rates below are effective as of October 1, 2024

  • Tier I - Employee contribution rate is 7.5% for regular employees and 8.5% for law enforcement employees.
  • Tier II - Employee contribution rate is 6.2% for regular employees and 7.0% for law enforcement employees.

  • UNA provides remission of tuition and fees benefit to eligible employees, which includes employee remission as well as both spouse and dependents.

    Paid Time Off

  • Eligible administrators are providing an initial leave balance of four weeks. Thereafter, four weeks of annual leave per calendar year is accrued at a monthly rate.
