Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. The school offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 130 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for hybrid work location schedule. Employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media seeks a dynamic, innovative, and team-oriented librarian to serve as the director of its Park Library.
The position delivers proactive, client-centered education, research, and information services using a variety of methods and technologies. By combining deep understanding of the role of libraries and librarians and experience meeting the unique needs of both core and non-traditional library users, the Librarian will seek to elevate the Park Library as a vibrant and integral part of all aspects of the School. The position is responsible for creating a patron experience that offers a seamless connection between the Library’s services, physical collections, digital collections, physical space, and online presence.
The Librarian provides classroom, small group, and individual instruction in research techniques, literature reviews, and specialized reference databases. The Librarian will teach approximately 40-50 individual classes annually for a variety of the Hussman School’s courses, including journalism, investigative reporting, marketing, Black press & U.S. history, public relations writing and campaigns, infographics, media management, undergraduate honors, and business journalism, among others. The incumbent will consult with graduate students (in groups or individually) on research for their projects, theses, and dissertations, as well as provide tailored orientation to various residential and remote graduate classes.
The Librarian works closely with publisher and vendor representatives, colleagues in the UNC Library system, and other groups across campus on all facets of book, journal, and electronic resource management. The Librarian is responsible for the evaluation, selection, acquisition, receipt, care, cataloguing, and display of all materials in the Park Library’s collection (current and historic, in print and digital formats). The position conceptualizes and implements library services; conducts ongoing assessments of the library collections and needs; and develops web-based guides and other research and learning products as needed.
The incumbent may serve on library and university committees and is expected to be active in scholarly and professional organizations and the academic community. This Librarian also seeks opportunities to ally with campus, local, and national partners to develop mutually beneficial activities that attract and serve shared audiences.
The Librarian reports to the Dean and supervises the Equipment and Library Asset Manager who oversees the daily operations of the Park Library, including the circulation of equipment and gear used by students in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires the Masters in Library Science (MLS) degree (or foreign degree equivalent). In specialized libraries, may substitute an advanced degree in the field of specialization (e.g., legal degree for a law library, or a history degree for a special historical collection within the library setting).
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Demonstrated experience teaching adult learners using scalable, interactive methods, both one-on-one and in groups, online and face-to-face.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively and equitably engage students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, to successfully balance competing priorities, and to work with inflexible deadlines.
- Proficiency with MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience working as a news librarian in a newsroom or academic library OR experience working in advertising or public relations OR experience working in an academic or special library supporting patrons in either journalism, advertising or public relations.
- Experience working with a range of academic patrons, including undergraduate and graduate students, both residential and virtual, as well as faculty and community members.
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, design, implement and assess library services and programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of communication resources, including bibliographic databases, grey literature, and publicly available data sets.
- Comfort with new digital and social media tools that deepen engagement with and promote use of the library.
- Knowledge of WordPress, web design and user experience practices, principles, and trends, especially for academic libraries.
- Ability to build support and buy-in without directly supervising stakeholders.
- Flexibility and willingness to work in a changing environment.
