Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs consists of eleven functional departments, each of which is responsible for providing a variety of student support, service, and educational programs which are accessible to all members of the university community. The staff members are dedicated individuals known for their passion and commitment to implementing programs and services that affect student development over the course of a lifetime. Transition Programs is an organizational unit within the Division of Student Affairs, reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs. The Office of Transition Programs provides a comprehensive array of programs designed to meet the unique needs of undergraduate students and parents from orientation through graduation. Programs generate an intentional connection for the students through engaging interactions with other students, faculty and staff.
Some of the programs supported by the Office of Transition Programs are:
- First-Year and Transfer Orientation
- Fall and Spring Commencement
- New Student Convocation
- Family Programming and Engagement
- Peer Mentor Programs
- First Generation Programs
- Transfer Programs
Services provided by Transition Programs:
- Enrollment Management – Collaborating with Academic Affairs on best practices for program development related to transitioning and retaining students.
- Program Development – Provide direction on the development of effective programs that impact the persistence and retention of students.
- Student and Leadership Development – Provide leadership experiences and learning opportunities through student training and employment.
- Marketing – Developing materials, programs, and publications that are relevant to new students and their families.
- Resource Management – Provide direction on the efficient and effective use of resources through evaluation and assessment of student and user fees.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Coordinator of First-Year Programs supervises the Seahawk Link peer mentor leadership team and develops and executes social and educational programs for first-year students throughout the academic year. The coordinator oversees evening programming for summer orientation and maintains the orientation registration system. They also provide implementation support for special events and academic celebrations coordinated by Transition Programs, including but not limited to Convocation, Commencement, Family Weekend, and first-generation and transfer programs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
- Master’s degree in higher education or college student personnel; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Experience in the field of orientation, transition, and retention
- Experience coordinating educational and social programs in a higher education setting
- Experience advising or supervising student groups or organizations in a higher education setting
- Experience working with first-year students
