Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Water Institute at UNC was created in 2009 and is hosted within the Gillings School of Public Health (the #1 public school of global public health) in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE). The Water Institute works to create a more water secure world through research, policy and practice and serves as a platform for mobilizing the knowledge, expertise, and resources that exist across UNC to address critical water and sanitation challenges within the U.S and abroad. The Institute includes core faculty and staff, researchers, and a network of experts and adjunct / affiliated faculty members that lead and drive research on areas related to safe and sustainable drinking water services; sanitation; the provision of water, sanitation, and other environmental services in institutional settings (e.g., schools, healthcare facilities, humanitarian zones); water security; and the impacts of climate change on drinking water and sanitation services in low- and middle income countries.

Position Summary

The Water Institute works to create a more water secure world through research, policy and practice and serves as a platform for mobilizing the knowledge, expertise, and resources that exist across UNC to address critical water and sanitation challenges within the U.S and abroad. The Institute includes core faculty and staff, researchers, and a network of experts and adjunct / affiliated faculty members that lead and drive research on areas related to safe and sustainable drinking water services; sanitation; the provision of water, sanitation, and other environmental services in institutional settings (e.g., schools, healthcare facilities, humanitarian zones); water security; and the impacts of climate change on drinking water and sanitation services in low- and middle income countries.

The Associate Director (AD) will work closely with the Director of the Water Institute to lead and oversee the management of all activities pertaining to research, strategic planning, project delivery, business development, budgeting, financing, and personnel administration of the Water Institute. This includes oversight and management of scientific research related to drinking water and sanitation, water security, and monitoring and evaluation; and the annual UNC Water and Health Conference - the world's largest annual international conferenced focused exclusively on the science and evidence related to water and health. The AD will assist the Director in designing, acquiring funding for, and implementing the multiple research programs of the Water Institute and will assist the Director in managing other Water Institute staff to ensure completion of projects. This position will report to the Director.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum qualifications of an advanced degree, masters or higher (or foreign degree equivalent), and no less than 5 to 7 years of management-level experience in the full range of administrative and financial functions of an academic department or research center in a higher education, research, or health care setting. Candidates with 7 to 10 years of directly comparable experience may substitute for the required advanced degree in which case a bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and the requisite experience is mandatory.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Master's degree in public health or related field (or foreign degree equivalent).

Ten years' work experience in advancing scientific research related to water and sanitation and one or more of the following : water and sanitation programs and project management, strategic planning, project delivery, business development, budgeting, or finance.

Five years' work experience in managing research and / or capacity building programs in low- and middle-income countries.

Five years' work experience in Conference management.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Experience in securing funding and managing programs from non-traditional donor sources (e.g., non-profits, non-governmental / international organizations, private foundations). Experience in leading projects and programs within a university environment. Prior engagement in the UNC Water and Health Conference is preferred.
