Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

This North Carolina Institute for Public Health (NCIPH) at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health seeks a Communications Project Manager to lead communications activities for complex projects. NCIPH has a mission to collaboratively lead and foster innovative solutions to public health challenges in NC and beyond by creating systems, policies, and programs that work for all. NCIPH uses the expertise of our staff, partners and the UNC Gillings community to transform organizations, develop leaders, translate data to action and build capacity to improve public health. The Communications Project Manager will be responsible for planning, implementing, and coordinating public health communication strategies and activities for large grant- or contract-funded projects. The Communications Project Manager is required to interact with public health professionals from the local, state and national human services sectors, with a particular emphasis on collaborations with local and state governmental public health agencies in the Southeastern Region of the US. The individual in this role will oversee and provide strategic support for multiple NCIPH communications initiatives and manage communications support for various public health projects.

This role will :

Lead a workstream for a governmental public health taskforce to engage NC stakeholders in collaboration to initiate and sustain communication collaboratives in NC and collectively build health communication and messaging capacity for telling public health s story to multiple audiences.

Serve as the communications lead in a public information officer role for the newly established Region 4 Public Health Preparedness and Recovery Center at Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Co-develop messaging, visuals and marketing tactics based on communications theories, frameworks, and best practices, including digital accessibility and emerging trends in health communication.

Help NCIPH and our partners effectively disseminate information, combat misinformation and dis-information, and reach target audiences for public health programs.

Collaborate with project managers, supporting staff and faculty, other communications experts, the Gillings communications team, contractors, and external partners to achieve set goals.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to establish timelines, scope deliverables, provide oversight, juggle multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, advise and collaborate with internal parties and external clients regarding communication needs and issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and use communication, design and visual art concepts and practices pertinent to the public health field.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to conceptualize and convey complex information clearly and persuasively.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team-based environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, SharePoint), Zoom videoconferencing, or other similar software.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience in establishing performance metrics and indicators for communications activities.
  • Experience designing and managing dissemination of content for websites, social media, and email campaigns / listservs.
  • Experience working in an academic or non-profit environment.
  • Experience with software and tools used for designing and disseminating communications. Examples may include graphic design software (such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite), photography or photo editing tools (such as Adobe Photoshop), email design tools (such as MailChimp), video editing software (such as Vyond), social media platforms (such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram) and / or website design (such as WordPress, Dreamweaver, other HTML editing software).
  • Experience using educational learning management software (such as TalentLMS, Moodle, etc.).
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility best practices and AP Style guidance.
  • Experience using Asana or similar project management software
  • Required Licenses / Certifications
