Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Gillings Research Unit supports the school's research enterprise by :

  • Helping researchers identify funding opportunities and research resources.
  • Facilitating team science and research collaborations across campus.
  • Supporting proposal development.
  • Providing workshops and training opportunities to the Gillings research community.
  • Tracking research metrics and public health research impact.
  • Assisting researchers as they navigate research compliance.

Position Summary

The Gillings Research Office invites application for a new position for a Training Grants Project Manager. This position was created to provide high level support for the number of successful training grants led by faculty in the Gillings School of Global Public Health (SPH). This portfolio of predominately NIH-funded awards requires substantial data collection, organization, and reporting. To continue to successfully renew these grants and obtain new strategic training grants, SPH is hiring a project manager to provide comprehensive support for the organization and development of training grant applications and related resources. This position will serve as the central point person in the SPH to coordinate efforts that proactively develop and implement resources, improve efficiency, develop systems to track and generate reports on supported trainees, and promote best practices and data sharing. This process requires significant input and outreach with the training grant community within Gillings and UNC to enhance the available resources. This position reports to the assistant dean for research while maintaining robust relationships with the training program directors / PIs.

Additionally, this position will support other projects of strategic importance to the Gillings Research Office.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Superior oral and written communication skills, sound business judgment, tact and diplomacy, and ability to interact with personnel at all levels of the University and Student Affairs.
  • Strong organizational and management skills, including the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Degree related to public health or other biomedical sciences
  • Experience with the culture and data requirements for training grants, including knowledge of NIH systems (eRA Commons, xTRACT, XTrain)
  • Experience with pre-award grant development
  • Experience with non-financial post-award processes
  • Experience with data collection and managing databases
