Department Summary

The Center for Human Identification (CHI) is an accredited forensic laboratory on the campus of The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. With funding from the State of Texas and various Federal Government agencies, CHI supports forensic DNA testing, anthropological examinations, local CODIS operations, training, and various research and development initiatives. CHI also manages the Texas Missing Persons DNA Database.

Position Overview

The Investigator, part of the Investigative Support Unit, will serve as investigative support for CHI’s Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG) and other casework units, as well as a liaison in CHI’s ongoing work with law enforcement and medicolegal agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of criminal investigation or forensic/crime scene technician experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate years of additional experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working with criminal justice agencies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal units and multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience in criminal investigation, with knowledge of federal, state, local and/or law enforcement processes and policies.
  • Experience implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Ability to strategically collect and analyze data, establish facts and prepare reports.
  • Experience facilitating innovation and relationship building.
  • Strong communicator in written and oral form.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting/investigating a case using FGG technology.
  • Experience utilizing analytical/public records databases for investigative support purposes (i.e. Accurint for Government Plus)
  • Experience entering, modifying, and/or searching databases of missing and unidentified persons cases, such as ViCAP, NamUs, and NCIC.
  • Familiarity with the use of forensic databases for criminal/ forensic investigations.
  • Experience testifying in court.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as a liaison to local, regional, state, national, and tribal law enforcement agencies (LEA), offering investigative support on FGG and missing and unidentified persons cases.
  • Educate LEAs regarding CHI testing capabilities and assist with coordinating submissions between the LEA and CHI Evidence Unit.
  • Research and review investigative documentation to determine DNA testing and FGG criteria have been met.
  • Identify and confirm cold cases are still active and unsolved (confirmation of crime, unknown suspect)
  • Organize and utilize access and entry/searching of information in criminal justice databases, to include NamUs and ViCAP, in coordination with ISU directors to facilitate case comparisons and resolutions.
  • Initiate and collaborate on other investigative support projects/sponsored programs.
  • Implement new initiatives and resources related to training, technology development and technical assistance.
  • Collect buccal swabs for DNA processing.
  • Collaborate internally with staff on casework and sponsored programs, offering investigative support and methods to assist in resolutions.
  • Special projects, as applicable.
