Job Description
The Upward Bound TRIO program at the University of Northern Iowa is looking for Summer Program Assistants to join the staff for the 2025 Summer Program.
The Upward Bound 2025 Summer Program is a 6-week college prep residential program for eligible high school students (scholars) from the Waterloo Community School District. Participating scholars live in a dorm setting and take courses on the University of Northern Iowa campus (Monday-Friday). Scholars and staff also take part in extracurricular activities that include college visits, theater workshops, and more. The summer program will run from June 9th through July 20th with training starting on June 2nd.
Summer Program Assistants are responsible for supervising approximately 60 high school scholars. This position answers to Upward Bound Summer Program Dorm Coordinator.
Qualifications: Current undergraduate student of sophomore status or older with the ability to work with and mentor high school students required. Residence hall supervisory experience a plus but not required. Experience working with diverse, low-income, and first-generation high school students is preferred. No outside employment is possible during Upward Bound summer employment. Must have a valid driver's license on file and pass a background check.
Duties and Responsibilities: Supervises Upward Bound scholars in their instructional classes, recreational activities, field trips and other events, and provides tutoring as needed; lives in the residence hall and are available at all times when scholars are in the residence hall; enforces rules, relates to high school students, and reports any problems to the Dorm Coordinators, or UB Program Director; mentors all scholars as needed, providing any assistance necessary to allow scholars to have a successful experience; conducts scheduled conferences with assigned scholars and submits completed forms to staff; assists other residential staff as needed; attends all required pre- and in-service training sessions and staff meetings; and submits a three-page typed summative report and attends an exit interview at the end of the Upward Bound Summer Program.
Salary/Compensation: $12.50 hour; room and board provided for the duration of the program.
