Established in 2012, the Transportation Services Department is an auxiliary unit within Finance and Administration whose goal is to provide customer-oriented sustainable transportation and parking programs and services to students, employees, and visitors to the University of Oregon. Transportation Services covers its expenses and operations through revenue generation, largely through permit sales, meter revenue, events, and citations. The unit’s annual budget is approximately $2 million. Transportation Services maintains more than 3,800 parking spaces on or adjacent to campus in more than 60 lots and two multi-level parking garages.
Transportation Services facilitates university travel by managing a motor pool that provides reliable, well-maintained vehicles for university-related travel. Motor pool services support convenient, cost-effective transportation to meet diverse needs and is managed with a focus on safety, efficiency, environmental sustainability, and fiscal responsibility.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director of Transportation Services, the Motor Pool Manager oversees the operations, personnel, maintenance, finance, and administration of the university's motor pool, ensuring a safe, reliable, and well-maintained fleet to meet the university's transportation needs. This role includes managing vehicle reservations and inventory, overseeing and coordinating maintenance and repairs, and supervising a team of motor pool staff. The Motor Pool Manager is responsible for implementing effective processes that ensure that all vehicles are available and in excellent condition to support the university’s various departments and programs.
This position oversees the day-to-day operations, such as vehicle dispatch and returns, preventive maintenance in-house and with service providers, and monitoring the fleet’s usage to optimize vehicle allocation. Additionally, the Motor Pool Manager provides customer service to university departments, addressing specific transportation needs and managing concerns to ensure a smooth reservation experience. The Motor Pool Manager serves on the Transportation Services leadership team and, as such, coordinates with other Transportation Services staff to develop shared resources and opportunities.
The Motor Pool Manager works closely with the Associate Director of Transportation Services to develop policies and program goals and make recommendations for maintaining and improving program operational and financial efficiency. Budget management, expense tracking, fleet purchases, and generating usage reports are also crucial aspects of this role.
The Motor Pool Manager is also responsible for compliance, ensuring that all motor pool activities adhere to university policies and align with university, state, and federal regulations concerning health, safety, environmental standards, codes, emissions, and driver authorization. Strong organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and effective team management are essential in this role to maintain a high standard of safety and service across all motor pool operations.
It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license throughout employment in this position. This unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.
Minimum Requirements
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university OR equivalent education and experience.
- Two years of experience in supervision, including team development, planning and assigning work, disciplinary action, hiring / firing, and performance
reviews.
