Department Summary

The Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact is an ambitious initiative designed to fast-track scientific discoveries into innovations that improve the quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation, and the world. The campus creates the intellectual infrastructure to establish Oregon as a center for both research and development, making Oregon a place where companies can start up and grow. The Knight Campus will reshape the higher education landscape in Oregon by training the next generations of scientists, forging tighter ties with industry and entrepreneurs, and creating new educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

The Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program (KCGIP) at the Knight Campus trains students in the real-world knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the industrial and research laboratory - and at the interview table. We believe an advanced degree should help students land a job and prepare them for a successful career. The program currently has multiple tracks including Bioinformatics and Genomics, Semiconductors, Optical Materials & Devices, Polymer Science, and Molecular Sensors and Biotechnology. The program is also growing and able to launch new tracks to align with industry needs. The KCGIP currently enrolls 80-90 graduate students annually and is expected to have enrollment growth over the next 2-5 years.

Position Summary

The Semiconductor Program Director will have primary responsibilities for : oversight of equipment and facilities used in experiential learning and research, integration of industry targeted core curriculum, instruction of a subset of program-specific courses, and internal stakeholder engagement. Additionally, the Program Director will provide support for industry engagement and student recruitment. The position requires scientific expertise in the area of semiconductor device manufacturing.

Minimum Requirements

  • A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or a related discipline. In some cases, relevant experience can substitute for a terminal degree.
  • Three years of experience in semiconductor fabrication, processing, and characterization.
  • One year of experience in the instruction of experiential learning in an academic or industrial setting.
  • One year of experience mentoring graduate students or scientists in industry on industry-relevant professional skills (i.e. interviewing, resume writing, teamwork).

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment.
  • Expertise in the fabrication, processing, and analysis of semiconductor wafers and devices.
  • Strong interest in the training of graduate student scientists.
  • Ability to develop productive industrial and government lab partnerships to enhance student experiences and create opportunities for innovation.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience overseeing laboratory facilities.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as JMP or Minitab.
  • Experience in curriculum development for graduate level applied programs.
