Position Announcement :

The Cinema Studies Department at the University of Oregon is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Fiction Filmmaking with a start date of Fall 2025. We especially welcome applicants whose creative work and teaching focus on the representation of historically marginalized communities, including stories about, and at the intersections of, such topics as race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability, among others. Filmmakers who work on these topics from global and U.S. perspectives, as well as in independent and experimental modes of fiction are encouraged to apply.

The Cinema Studies Department has strength in national and global cinemas and a range of critical approaches to studying issues of power, representation, and identity. We are also committed to nurturing independent and underrepresented voices. Applicants should be filmmakers with artistic promise whose work aligns with the department’s core investment in centering theory, practice, and critical attention to diversity.

Competitive applicants will have a vibrant portfolio, evidence of work(s) in progress, a strong conceptual and technical understanding of the field, and an inclusive teaching philosophy and practice. The successful candidate will have the capacity to teach the broad fundamentals of filmmaking, including basic and advanced technical production skills related to screenwriting, directing, producing, and distributing film and media.
